PERSONALITY: Journey is a pretty easy going filly. She doesn't get buddy or barn sour, and is happy to go off on her own and explore. She's pretty confident within herself. She's not all that fearful because of this, as she likes to approach things head on. Her relationship with people is an interesting one, and she enjoys the benefits that come from the 2-legged beings, mostly food and treats. She's not always down to work though, so catching her can leave one frustrated. She does need a firm hand because she is so confident, that she can easily overrun a passive handler. She'd rather insist she knows what she's doing rather than follow, so corrections are frequent. Although she might have started off as a young and fearful foal, who knows how outgoing she would have been had she been properly handled form the start of her life. She's a fighter, and although not the dominant one in the herd, she definitely isn't a doormat. She almost acts like she's got something to prove.

HISTORY: Her papers show that she was born at a small Thoroughbred farm in Missouri, likely the happenings of a backyard breeder. Her dam came from British lines and was American born, and was lightly roaned, with a small race record that didn't amount to much. Her sire was imported from Australia by a breeder in Kentucky, in which the mare was sent to in order to be bred before coming home in foal. Her sire showed promise when young, but it's unknown what happened to him when he was sold during his 3 year old year. Essentially, her family history is that of a mystery. It is believed that the farm she was born at fell upon financial issues, in which she was hauled to an auction and placed in what the locals called the "kill pen" in Missouri. She was a fresh yearling, however leggy and underweight. She was fearful of humans, and looked to have little handling. Her feet a bit long, her coat dry and brittle, mane and tail tangled. She looked like she had never been out of the pasture her whole life. A friend of Painted Deserts in Oklahoma who frequented the auction, knowing that often old and retired Thoroughbreds showed up there, found the filly in one of the back pens with the other undesirables. Her owners had her registration papers in hand, her name unchosen. The kill buyers didn't care about color, but her rarity screamed that she could easily find a home. So, the friend bid until the kill buyers knew the filly wasn't worth it, after all, she was underweight, and they could always go to the next auction. For a measly $350, the filly was sold, and taken back to Oklahoma. There, she was started on proper feed and supplements to help her gain the nourishment she'd lost. Within months, she looked like a completely different horse. The trust from just the feeding alone established her desire to be with humans, and she quickly took to learning to lead, and accepting blankets, fly masks, and everyday handling. She wasn't quite ready to be adopted out yet, but horses were pouring in. After hearing about the situation, Natalie contacted the facility, and offered to take a few horses. It was instantly decided that the little filly would be on her way to California. She's sprouted like a weed during her stay in Oklahoma, but as she neared her 2 year old year, her training would begin.

COMMENTS: Color breeders dream perhaps? Two of the most rare genes in Thoroughbreds combined! She's comes from Australian and British bloodlines, however was born in the USA. A friend of Painted Desert's owners had picked her up from a kill pen as a yearling, underweight and afraid of everyone. They helped add some pounds to her, and socializing her with animals and people. She's come a long ways, and after a trip to their farm, Natalie brought her home. The people who had bought her needed to clear room for more rescues, and knew Painted Desert had the facilities to keep her healthy and going. Her story was just beginning...

Everyone meet Journey, my future hopeful for racing Yeahhhh she looks like a Paint Horse, and actually she can be registered as one, but she's technically a registered Thoroughbred.
