Description
This is a character of mine in a new style I decided to try. I don't know how to feel about it with color. I kind of am thinking this might be better left without it. In any case, I wanted to mess around with something new while also getting a character done. He's a simple boy but I love him. Please keep in mind that, if you decide to criticize his life/story, his story is based on the dog I grew up with and love. He has passed on, and all I ask is you respect him and me if you decide to make a comment. The events in this story are based on events that happened in his life, but the people (wolves) in his life are not going to be noted as anyone in particular. Some events may have been adapted to fit this setting. This is a tribute to him.
If you have questions about the characters mentioned and/or Talflut, I don't mind answering them if they aren't anything that could get into personal territory.
Talflut's Life
Talflut had a hard start to life: his mother died while giving birth to him in the dead of winter, and his siblings were born with fatal defects. His father was never around for him and, thus, he never knew him. Being too young to hunt for himself, much less walk or open his eyes, there wasn't anything he could do to help himself. His situation was grim. That is until a wolf - an alpha male by the name of Gebirge - stumbled upon the starving pup. He had a pup of his own and, while he knew this pup could never be one of his own or carry the strength of a wolf, perhaps there would be some use for him. A cruel way to see a helpless pup, but perhaps this was not how Gebirge had ever intended it. In any case, Gebirge took the pup back home to his mate, Fuchs, who would raise Talflut and her daughter together. It would be in the days coming when Shikoba would actually be the one to give Talflut his name.
As time went on, Talflut and his littermate - Shikoba - would grow a close bond. He was her brother and she was his sister. However, in his growing age, Gebirge would become increasingly more cruel to the both of them. There would be moments in Talflut's younger years where he would fear Gebirge and cower, only to be thrown around like the older wolf's chew toy. Despite Gebirge being Shikoba's father, she would attempt to stop him in whatever way she could. Unfortunately, Gebirge was rather large for a wolf to begin with, and Shikoba was much smaller in comparison. Even when she and Talflut grew older Gebirge towered over them. Shikoba's efforts were in vain, and Talflut had not yet gained the courage to move against this unusual cruelty from Gebirge. In spite of this fear, Talflut would protect Shikoba when he would believe her to be in danger. While Gebirge never would lay harm to Shikoba, his demeanor would alarm Talflut. It took no thought for Talflut to jump on on these situations and even give Gebirge warning bites that would draw minimal blood to show Talflut was serious. Gebirge would retalliate and Talflut would, sadly, never win in those fights against Gebirge.
Despite the alpha male's cruelty, Talflut still had many positive times in the pack with the rest of his family: Fuchs would teach him how to act like a wolf and, later, Shikoba would help him learn new tactics for hunting. Gebirge did not value Talflut enough to do any of this himself and, quite frankly, Talflut didn't want him to. The alpha male only saw the flaws in him while Fuchs and Shikoba would often praise him for his intelligence. Talflut knew he was not strong like he needed to be to help take down the larger prey but, over time, he would adapt and help the pack create new tactics which would make hunts succeed significantly more often. He would also line the dens they made with brambles and rocks which would make it much harder for a coyote or fox to invade while everyone went hunting. Even though Talflut had become an asset to the pack, Gebirge would never let him forget what he really was: a mutt trying to have his place in a pack of wolves.
The rest of the pack would, however, love and respect Talflut for his intelligence and loyalty. He would drag Shikoba home if he had to when she was hurt, and that was something they could respect in a packmate no matter what they were. Even Gebirge's parents - whom he took leadership from rather early in his life - loved and respected Talflut as if he were truly a wolf. They and the rest of the pack would never know about Gebirge's violent outburts against Talflut, seeing as it was always done away from others aside from Fuchs and Shikoba. Regardless, the rest of the pack made sure Talflut knew how loved he was and he loved them too. He would protect them on many occasions however he could.
Personality-wise, Talflut is a very calm but fun-loving dog. He would often spend his time with Shikoba, running through water and chasing birds. He was fiercely protective of his entire family - his pack - but it was always clear that Shikoba was his first priority. When she was injured, he would stay as close as possible to her until she was better. On stormy nights when both were just young pups, they would cuddle up to one another despite being afraid of the sounds of lightning. Talflut also showed an incredible amount of patience when it came to others as well. To the new pups, he would only push them away so as not to hurt them even if they were causing him pain by biting too hard, pulling on his ears, or jumping on his tail. He was very gentle and controlling of his emotions to a point where it was impressive. New pups always loved him, and he always would protect them if anything endangered them. There was no better wolf than Talflut.
Why didn't Shikoba and/or Fuchs leave Gebirge?
Gebirge had a lot of control over the pack and was known by both to be very vengeful when he believed he had been wronged. They would, eventually, leave but it wouldn't be until much later.
Why was Gebirge so cruel?
Gebirge always thought the world and, in some cases, his pack was against him. It wasn't just Talflut that Gebirge was cruel to, but Talflut was the one that took the physical beating so that no one else had to. Gebirge would take out all his anger on Talflut, leaving no room for Gebirge to turn his anger onto anyone else. Outside of this, Gebirge's age would make him see a warped sense of reality that wasn't there. He would tell lies so often that he would come to believe them too, forgetting what they had been all along: lies.
What are the feathers for?
The blue jay feathers are how the wolf pack identifies its members without the need of scent. It is seen as a rite of passage as well, especially since it is believed by the pack that the feathers will help them move on to their lives after death.
How old is Talflut?
He is 8 years old, though he might tell you he's 8 years young.
