Marie couldn’t believe how much Lucas was overreacting. Their show jumping round was crystal clear and perfect. Sai came out with tight, cool legs and Marie came out with one of the fastest times. Regardless, Lucas was livid. Yeah, she didn’t ride exactly like Grandpa Lucas would have, but as far as she was concerned, they got the brilliant round because she was willing to take risks. That’s what the sport is all about. Taking risks.
The rest of the day and the following was awkward, though. She could tell he was not happy with her. Frankly, he didn’t say much at all to her. While she tacked Sai up for dressage, he sat on a tack trunk across from the stall and didn’t say a word, like he was lost in his own, pissed off little world.
But, dressage was Marie’s weakest phase of eventing and she did need him and his wisdom now. Nerves tied her stomach in knots. Her heart fluttered at the thought of him now coaching at this point, leaving her to her own demise. She could handle speed, but dressage was all elegance and precision. She lacked in this department.
“Are you just going to ignore me for the rest of the event because of one round?” Marie finally said in a huff as she tossed her shiny, black dressage saddle up on Sai’s back. “It was a beautiful round and you know it. I don’t understand why you’re so mad”
Lucas didn’t say anything for a few minutes, pondering what to say.
“You obviously know more than I do and all my years of experience. That’s what you think, right? You don’t like being told what to do. So I won’t. You’re on your own. You screw up this million dollar horse you are trusted to ride, a true opportunity, and then what are you going to do? Lyanna won’t let you touch any more of her horses, nor will I. Good luck getting another riding spot somewhere else. You know people talk, and oh, do they. I’d honestly like to see you get a spot anywhere else right now. You have a whole lot of nerve, but not a whole lot of smarts if you think you will get anywhere at all in this sport the way you are going now. The attitude? The recklessness? No. People don’t want to deal with it and, frankly, they don’t have to. You just won’t ride professionally.” The man causally crossed the ankles of his tall boots and leaned back against the stall, closing his eyes.
Marie’s cheeks burned crimson hit as she stood in shock. No one has ever been so blunt before to her, frankly because most people were afraid of her. Lucas wasn’t afraid, though. He saw straight through her and he was all she had right now.
Silence hung in the aisle between them like thick soup. She continued to tack up slowly, taking her time and letting his reality check sink in. He was right. He had taken a chance on her and she was blowing it by letting it get to her head.
She stood in the stall’s doorway, ready to go, her cheeks feeling numb and tingly. The tack he had cleaned for her gleamed in the dusk sun peeping through the barn window, showing how nicely oiled the black leather was and making the diamonds gleam.
“Will you come talk me through this test before I go in…” she managed to say, her voice almost a whisper. “Please..?”
Lucas waited a moment, pretending to be asleep, then opened one eye to see if she was still there. With a sigh and a little groan, he got himself up. “Don’t screw this up, okay?” He said through a full body stretch. “I got a lot riding on you.” Then, they were on their way to warmup
