Description Title : Traditional Kufi Calligraphy -

Description:

This is my second and last entry for the July Calligraphy Contest. This is an experiment in traditional Kufi Script. It is original work, please respect copyright. "It is not a font".

What it says:
The green part above the english word is Arabic word, "Al-Khattaatee" meaning, "Calligraphy, or Art of Calligraphy". The gray background is same word in Square Kufi tile work.

What is Kufi:
It is an ancient Arabic writing style. Kufi has the honor to be the first writing style in which Quraan was written.
It is said to have developed from Hiri style of Makkah. According to another opinion, it originated in city of Kufa, in modern Iraq, hence the name Kufi.
Traditionally, long and relatively thick horizontal strokes, devoid of any diacritics or other marks, are characteristic of Kufi. However, today, numerous changes have been brought. Kufi Al Maghribi and Square Kufi are its popular variants. Many of later developed scripts are based on this style. Especially, most of the modern styles. Kufi and particularly the Square Kufi can be the natural language of computers for the ability to fit perfectly in pixels.

About this design:
[1]. Written with ordinary reed pen [Qalam]. I dont know what type of pen/nib is used for Kufi. [2]. Scanned [3]. Imported and Redrawn in Adobe Illustrator using the scan for proper alignment.

I must mention, that I did not learn Kufi from any one. I learnt it over hundreds of images of Kufi Calligraphy. So, it is fine but it is not a work of traditional Kufi calligrapher. I am not entirely happy with the letter hayh, the one with circular swoosh and red dot. I did not like the traditional shape of hayh and the original form was going to make it monotonous. I decided to go a little fancier.

It took me at most 10 hours in one week. The original design that I am working over since the starting date, is still incomplete. So, I have decided to stop and post the simplest form.
