Dernah and her assistant (also a spacecraft pilot) touch down on a barren world to study luminescent crystal formations protruding from the rocky floor of an immense impact crater.

A harsh, primordial environment surrounds them - a series of clicks and beeps from the diagostic sensor confirms seismic activity is common in the region.

Though just breathable, the air is too thin and acidic to support prolonged activity outside the ship. Without life support suits, time on the surface is limited. Dernah moves a detector over the crystals to check for potentially harmful ionising radiations.
