Description Something different, something long overdue: B A C K G R O U N D S !

This started as a plein air painting (1 hour) at Itasca State Park in MN, on the LaSalle hiking trail. The weather couldn't have been more perfect, but maybe I'm biased, because September and October are my absolute favorite months, and what better way to pass the time than painting under some beautiful old red and white pines?

Winsor and Newton watercolors in a Moleskine watercolor sketchbook, cold press finish. Time: 1 hour on location, 1.5 in the studio (mostly for adjusting values/deepening shadows/adding details.)

This is an awesome, beautiful background! I love it! And - it looks so detailed and... not very much "watercolorish". One can see that it is watercolor when looking closer, but otherwise it has wonderful, strong colors and a great shading and shadow-light mixture (like a forest has).

I've been wondering for some time now if I was imagining the fact my watercolors don't look like watercolors: I suppose that makes sense, as I tend to work pretty dry, I think this is one where I went a little stronger and heavier on the washes before filling them in with darker details. Watercolor is so endlessly fascinating, there's SO many ways to use it, and I feel I'll be amazed by it for as long as I use it.

^^
You might just have inspired me to try watercolors again in near future. I'm always a bit "split" about them - on the one hand, there are so many possibilities on how to use them (and I see many wonderful artworks created with watercolors), and on the other hand, when I use them I sometimes feel a bit "frustrated". Maybe just practice a bit more ^^

So good to see some landscape work from you.  I've missed it.   Lovely work as always.

Definitely! Wish I had the energy to do landscapes/backgrounds more often. Sometimes they take a lot out of me, but I think that's just a sign I need to do them more until they feel so natural it's all but effortless!

Love it! So beautiful and true. I find it so inspirational when fall begins, even under the heat of summer, but something changes in everything. Very sublime, but obvious to the higher perceptions.

There is something very entrancing about the low angle of the sun, it seems to put everything into all day "golden hour." It's a pity it lasts so briefly! (Well, here anyway!)

It is indeed! I'd like to get out in the next few weeks and start painting some river landscapes, as peak autumn leaf color is almost upon us here!

Thanks! I need to get out on location more and brush up on these skills! Plus, it's therapeutic, how many more reasons do I need?

Absolutely! It's a short one (1 mile, I think, but I walk back along it so I can see everything from a different angle) and all the trails I've walked so far in Itasca State Park are just pure beauty. Landmark and Bohall are two small trails in that park that have gorgeous old growth pine stands that I'd like to paint (in the morning!) but I'd need a small camp chair because the trails are pretty narrow. Either that, or I'll have to get better at photography/buy a real camera!

Thanks for the tips! I've been doing longer trails lately (1-3 hours a hike), but some shorter ones sound real nice. I could practice my sketching too.

Ooh, I'd love to take longer ones! Though I think with my iffy shoulder/back, I might have to sacrifice the painting supplies for an extra bottle of water and some food. OR I could find some compromise between the two... It's pretty easy for me to forget that going on too long of a hike gets paid for later with sore muscles!

Thank you! The photo I took as a comparison to this study looked cluttered and dark in places, so I think for once the painting looks better than the photo!

Thank you! Hard to really capture light and atmosphere on location, when you can basically see the lighting change as you work. I would love to find time to do more of these!
