Description Wonderful, now I've gone and distracted myself yet again, this time with some shiny new nibs and a bottle of Higgins Sepia ink, all done in my A4 size Moleskine. I should REALLY stop uploading so often. There's other things that need to be taken care of, like organizing for that upcoming sale. HA! Like that will happen. I'm such a mess right now.

This is, if you are curious about the art, a revamp of my character Shalthan, from an unnamed species of mine. You may recognize him from these following deviations. [link]
[link]
[link]

So you can see he's changed some, I've tried a little harder to make him seem more like a real creature. (Especially with the muzzle.) Note: Those horns are very tricky to draw. They also look a wee bit small in this drawing, especially by comparison to those older illustrations.

I have sepia ink blotches on my hands now that make me look as though I have some sort of affliction. It doesn't wash off too well, either. Ah well, better fly!

Questions, comments, critiques, etc. are welcome as always.

ooh, very beautiful!!Sepia I am in love with,as it adds a renaissance air to almost any drawing?...Did you use the big soft-cover A4 moleskines?..I find them hard to ink in,but I shall try Higgins,I don't think I know the brand!?
The horns look marvellous...extremly fierce!

Those are some awesome horns right there. Reminds me of those sheep you see in petting zoos that have horns all over their faces, but more majestic.

Oh April, you're so good at getting distracted, aren't you? I like his horns better this way, it makes him more real (or else he must have a really strong neck!). I'm not too sure about his fur being blue either, but that's just my opinion. The sepia ink is wonderful!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

pallanoph In reply to CarrotStalker [2009-11-06 19:58:01 +0000 UTC]

I'm incredibly good at it. I think being distracted is my number one talent.

I think I agree with you on both points. The first illustrations were done for a childrens' book illustration course, so I thought the outsized horns and blue fur made him a little more fantasy. If I were to paint a more realistic portrait, I think I'd have him a blue roan sort of color with black points.

Sepia ink makes everything nice.

You know, quite often I've felt as though I've not challenged the concept of "horns" nearly enough. This was one of those moments where I shoved myself out on a limb, a handful of years ago... and it's evolved into something rather nice!

And thank you!

urgh, you come up with ideas like this how?
i seem to have an imagination the size of a raisin.
if imaginations were measured in dried fruit that is...

anyways, i love it and i am envious of the skill you portray with ink. its irrittating, when i use ink it smudges like crazy.

teriathanin [2009-11-03 23:28:50 +0000 UTC]

Great penwork, yet again.
The time and work you put into the horns is easily apparent. Wow!
My only critique is that the muzzle is angled towards the viewer more than it should be, given the plane of the face indicated by the cheek and eye. Otherwise: perfect.
Do you use felt or dip pens?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

pallanoph In reply to teriathanin [2009-11-04 06:16:17 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much!

And you are absolutely right about the muzzle... (Of course, I only notice this until someone points it out, so thanks very much for doing so.) I don't imagine it would be too difficult to correct, either.

I prefer dip pens, the nib I used here was a Hunt 100. The sepia ink is also non-waterproof, so it flows much easier than standard India inks. A very nice surprise, though I'd have to plan out my washes in advance.

Hoooow did this take so long to enter my inbox!? I think this is one of my favorites of yours! The angles of the horns are fantastic; with that kind of pose I would have been pulling hair out with that horn on the back side, but you so nailed it!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

pallanoph In reply to Ashzoi [2009-11-04 05:57:33 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I know, I'm sooooooooo backed up on people's deviations, it makes me ashamed. I have been a terrible watcher as of late, and then I go look at the pieces and find I have absolutely nothing to say. So then I fave and run. And yet you never run out of things to say, because you're awesome.

Oh, you can see that that top section of the far horn threw me for a loop. So I'm more than a little glad that it looks alright!

I'd do a million pieces like this, only I'm worried they'd interfere with all the other things on my to-do list.

MistingWolf [2009-11-03 08:31:21 +0000 UTC]

Wow, he's looking better than ever! I love that sepia color. I'm betting a nice combination of black and sepia would look really neat. Oh, and I love his horns! He must have some VERY strong neck/shoulder/front leg muscled to carry such a heavy load. I would like to say I'm shamed that I never went back so far into your gallery to see those links of yours you put up. I really ought to go look around if nothing else. Also, I think it'd be wonderful if you posted the whole story you did. It'd make a pleasant read, I think, from what I saw. ^_^ I think most of us quite enjoy comics and stories.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

pallanoph In reply to MistingWolf [2009-11-04 05:49:47 +0000 UTC]

I'll bet it would! It's been ages since I've used more than one color of ink in a piece.

I suppose he would have some serious musculature, though I've never drawn him without that mane. And don't worry about those old links. They were just added in case someone didn't know where his old images were.

Perhaps I'll post the little sketched spreads for the whole book, as only three of them were made into final images. It might be something to do!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

MistingWolf In reply to pallanoph [2009-11-04 07:37:29 +0000 UTC]

The mane is pretty, no doubt about that!

About the name for the species. I have a lot of fun making up words or names by using other words [in English or otherwise] that are fairly long. A real example is I took the word "strawberry" and went every other letter to come up with "Tabry" as an old character name. I also think through words where spelling/pronunciation combinations are uncommon. Like the word "laugh". Not too many "f" sounds come from a "gh" combination that I know of. Then I came up with the word "ghan" ["fan"] for a serpentine creature in my book.

And I certainly would like to see that if you ever decide to post it. :}

Thanks very much! I think autumn and spring bring out the most of my muse, I tend to want to crank out a lot of work reflecting those seasons. Too bad this fall was a little short of my standards, but you can't win 'em all...

There's just something about the sepia ink that makes it more fun.
