“The great clock rang–instinctively, I glanced up at the face and I saw him for the first time. He stood at the edge of the maintenance platform, many hundreds of feet up in the air, staring off at nothing in the distance. His features were distinctively, otherworldly perfect; his hair of the purest silver; and his long, dark overcoat billowed elegantly in the wind.
People who knew of him called him the timekeeper, but those who knew anything more of him knew that he kept far more than just the time.
After adjusting my glasses to make sure I wasn’t just seeing things, I noticed a glowing, multicolored gem on his forehead–but before I could make anything further observations, I blinked, and he had vanished.
Apparently, he was only to be there for the duration of the twelve noontime chimes.”
