My interpretation of William's mother.

born with the special gift of being able to see what others cannot ( be it spirits or others) let her feeling alone in the changing world and often leading to her to take to drinking to spare her of her 'curse'.
this led to her being a poor mother figure to her son and the relationship became more distant as he got older.
she's also Celtic not that many would tell at first glance unless you hear her yelling.
