Awwww!! Honestly, and I've said this before, but that is the *best* of compliments. It's really so lovely knowing anyone out there is seeing some little piece of mine every day

I love how dark you went in the shadows. The monochromatic palette is very effective. Beautiful.

Thank you so much!! I'm glad you like the lighting, I wanted to give her the feel as if almost illuminated by starlight

A bold choice since your color scheme is warm rather than cool, but it works!

this is gorgeous.
it goes without saying what a wonderful dynamic and contrasting effect that you have created by using the sun to frame the profile of the subject.
love the antiquated feeling.
nice symbolism found in the pose.

excellent work.

I love this view of Hypatia. Thank you so much - I am Physicist - now historian of women of antiquity in science. What kind of licenses and royalties do you have associated with this picture? Could you point me to some links as well?

Hypatia, while brilliant, is never known to have put forward the heliocentric model of the solar system - unlike the movie Agora, which was inaccurate on this point. She did invent the astrolabe, though.

Second, she was not killed as a danger to society - she was murdered because she was believed to be at the center of a political controversy between the Governor of Alexandria and the Bishop. As an unrepentant Pagan, the Christians murdered her out of religious fervor, not because she was a danger.

Unlike in the movie, they did not merely stone her - they flayed her alive with roofing tiles.

It was a great tragedy - horrific, in fact. It is a shame that such a great figure was treated so vilely.

This is wonderful! Also, the movie "AGORA" captures her in a brilliant light, and shows how the Christians began their blood-thirsty and malevolent campaign to rule the world. A murderous cult, indeed!

I'm hooked on Hypatia!  Shame on me ... I did not know her.  And THAT is not like me!  However, when I pulled up images I recognized many of them; I just never delved into the story or her legacy.  There's one image that particularly caught my eye and if you scroll toward the bottom of this page you can see it:  scpahypatia.blogspot.com/   I was hoping it would tell me where the painting/frescoe (?) originated.  I believe I've seen it at Pompeii.  Or maybe I just saw prints of it there in a gift shop.  I'll do more research on it.  Anyway, I'm so glad I ran into you on DA.  You've opened up a whole new world of intrigue for me (and reading material ... and philosophies).  I've been to Pompeii many times; it's one of my favorite places to visit.  And although I've never been to Alexandria I have been to Egypt (a Nile cruise).  I am seriously dumbfounded at myself for not knowing about Hypatia!

I'm so happy to hear, and delighted that I was able to connect you with something that stirs you! What's truly remarkable about how little people know of her is that as a woman philosopher she was able to pinpoint the nature of the solar system when it took a millennia before the gentleman scientist we often credit this to revisited the idea! I couldn't tell you were that fresco is located, I just know Hypatia lived in Alexandria! That's incredible you've been to Pompeii, and I hope we both have the chance to visit Alexandria!!

So glad to meet you, my like-minded friend I can tell by your gallery that you are very interested in women's history.  When I was younger I read everything ... and I mean EVERYTHING about women/queens/goddesses, etc.  That's why I'm so surprised I missed learning about Hypatia.  I don't know how much I've retained ... the details may be lost to me at this point, names/places have melded into one long story about women.  But the overall message stays with me loud & clear.  Women ruled long before men ever did ... they were worshiped because they procreated.  But once the male species began to figure out that they had a part in reproduction they used that information and their physical strength to overpower the women of the world.  Nothing's been the same since!  But it's getting better.  I thought I'd see the passing of the Equal Rights Amendment in my lifetime.  Actually I hoped/voted for it in the early 80s.  But they gave it only 7 years to pass.  And time ran out.  No other amendment, as far as I know, has ever had a time frame imposed upon it.  Well, I ramble on.  Oh, one more thing, I will tell you that I had the largest feminist library of anyone I know ... and after decades of saving everything (books, notes from seminars I attended, pamphlets from NOW meetings, etc.) I got rid of it all.  Everything I owned was beginning to own me.  I downsized!  I can never call myself a Minimalist. That would be a huge fabrication.  But I have gotten rid of 90% of everything I've ever owned.  It is so much easier to just pick up & travel when the mood strikes me.  I always kid around and tell people "I stay packed" ... but actually, I pack very light and I just go go go!  Often times I will mail some clothes ahead of me ... and when I arrive at my destination my belongings are there to greet me  Anyway, my dear, just let me know if you are every in the mood to do some traveling.  You never know, we just might end up travel mates

They made a movie about this woman fairly recently, It's called Agora and stars Rachel Weisz. I haven't seen it yet but it looks quite good.
