Actually, this is a traditionally painted piece. (I used acrylics.)
As for GIMP ... I used to struggle with the same problem whenever I created custom brushes, so I usually just stick to the preset brushes. However, I think changing some of your brush settings might work. "Spacing" and perhaps "Hardness" in your brush settings might be the settings that might help the most regarding your problem with custom brushes.

I'm very sorry to hear that. Something like that really can bring out ones insecurities. In most cases, people mean nothing negative by stopping to reply. They might not have time to reply that very moment and forget to later on or they simply don't have anything to add to the topic you were discussing.

Oh, dankeschön! Tatsächlich war es mir hier auch sehr wichtig alles möglichst weich zu halten. Und natürlich auch farblich nicht zu viele Akzente zu verwenden, weil das nicht zum Motiv gepasst hätte.
