Painting for my Dad's friend of her cat, Basil. She nearly cried when we gave it to her because it looks so much like him

Those eyes just capture the cat perfectly. I've learned that there's more to drawing animals then just markings when it comes to making them look like themselves. They have that certain flare that makes them unique. I can tell you caught that judging by the owner's reaction~

Yes, certainly capturing the "essence" of the animal is a very important thing to do. When I first started painting pet portraits they looked incredibly flat. It helps to have several ref photos rather than just one, since you can assess the animal's looks and personality better, I think.
I've only got it wrong once because I made the dog too "serious"!! I fixed it though after liaising with the client.
It's certainly a LOT easier if it's an animal you've met in person (as is the case with this cat, Basil)

I'm not surprised she liked it so much. You've done a great job with this. I don't know the cat, but from this I bet he's a very playful and curious cat, you've really given him a lot of expression and personality in this.

Thanks very much! He's a sweet cat, rather skittish but very affectionate and playful if he knows you. He's also "nice but dim" according to his owners!
