Description The silver bayonet
Sits poised in place.
Its long shaft
Glittering in the sun
Light dances off the surface
Delicate, so it seems
A silver garden snake.

I pull the rifle trigger roughly
It springs to life
The bullet whizzes
Through the shaft
Past the opening
Into my enemy’s chest.

Suddenly, this bayonet
Once gleaming new and clean
Is caked with dirt
And slick with blood
No longer delicate, it seems
A silver deadly viper.
