Description I got my scanner working! 8D
Uploading this, since my schoolmates insisted it.

This isn't a Wurr character, he's ment for RP:ing. Wing growing would break the logic of the world of Wurr (hound mutations working with the basic of randomizing and wings needing a lot more defined design).

That being said, this here is Liu, his full name being Liu Sai Fan. (Because the name sounds fun, and I've wanted to use that name somewhere, but didn't want to put it into any story just in case it means something. That's not a big deal in most canine RPG:s since most of the characters in there have weird names, usually in English or Japanese, since those are cool languages, and most of the players are pretty young. Liu fits in.)

Man! I love characters who design themselves. They usually need some digging and poking, but in the end they create themselves, and let you know when you have found them. I had to search for the inner Liu for rather long time, but when I found him, bit by bit, he pretty much just felt that this is the way he was. Like, I thought to the very end that those spots on his wingtip should have had a brighter color (and I even asked my graphic designer friend what color I should use), but after none of my experiments felt right, I just gave uo and used the same gray as his base color, and I swear I thought about Liu looking at me with "Finally! About time you got it right"-expression.

Great times.

Oh, and since most of you probably can't understand Finnish, I'll translate the notes in the sheet here. From top to bottom.
* Overbite.
* Fourth wing bone/shaft/whateverthewordisinenglish (6th finger) always next to forearm.
* No tip on right wing.

Copic markers on a paper that's not ment for Copic markers.
Liu (c) to me, thanks.

Too bad you aren't using him for Wurr. I get the wings being to complicated for wurr gene randomizing-thingy but somewhere deep in my heart is said "Hey he sould be in wurr" then i saw the note and my poor heart went "awwww"

Your character designs are always well thought out and unique. I love how they all draw so well on actual anatomy as well. The bat-canine mix looks like it actually could be somewhat plausible (if evolution ever did go that course) And the fact that you're not afraid to go with asymmetry in your characters (like with the stunted wing) makes your characters that more interesting.

Juh, Liu on devu, ja täysillö hengessä mukana.

I can't say much in the anatomy part because I'm no expert, but it looks perfectly believable to me

What I really like about Liu though is the fact you went for dull colors instead of painfully bright ones. I swear, if any of the other wolf characters I've seen had to survive in the wild the prey would have spot them from miles away Xp

Aww, thank yous. ^^
I personally think that you can make much more original characters when you make them not original. At least that was the basic thought behind most of the designs in Wurr, they are just combinations of normal features you see everywhere. Or can you say that big fangs are original? Or having three eyes, never seen before? Or a very generic lighter marking on face that you can see on every other collie that walks across your path? Combine those, and there's Iacar, a character everyone recognizes, without needing to add a huge pile of details. But feather wings, piercings, neon color tattoos, glowing eyes... You can see them everywhere nowdays. I make my originality by doing nothing exactly original. (And I'm pretty proud of it. *bragbrag*)

resizer In reply to Paperiapina [2009-09-17 20:52:49 +0000 UTC]

I absolutely agree with you there. Exaggeration of what else would be normal features and combining them intelligently gives a far better result than accessory galore gone bad

You have absolutely all the right to brag XD

Tailbone [2009-09-16 15:29:03 +0000 UTC]

What a fantastic fellow! I absolutely love his design to death - mainly because it's the only winged wolf I have ever seen that had thought put into their anatomy! RavingSpazz was right - just yesterday I was crying over horrible back wings, because they're so prominent and it only take a glance to see how wrong they are. Too often people slap utterly useless decorations on their characters, growing bizarrely from the back, and expect us to believe they could actually fly.

The required extra shoulder joint, the correct structure, the leading edge, the appropriate amount of membrane extension, a nice broad chest - I absolutely love you, hahaha. Liu is such a breath of fresh air in the world of winged characters. He even has a sixth finger joint like a dewclaw! Perfect! 'course that poor deformed limb would get in the way of flight, but everything is still proper and wonderful!

They're absolutely gorgeous and he's a very believable character. Hugs for you and him both!

Paperiapina In reply to Tailbone [2009-09-17 18:05:05 +0000 UTC]

Heh, winged fantasy creatures are pretty much my pet peeves... Some time ago I made a dragon guide inspired by Christopher Hart's "Draw manga" series' dragon book. Just the cover picture is enough for me to want to make a book of my own, "Drawing dragons- a guide for those who want to make beliveable fantasy creatures". Orsomethinglikethat... *cough*

I'm glad there are other people who think that fantasy can be taken more seriously when their creatures don't look like they were stolen from Mickey Mouse cartoons. I can imagine, that if I was ever going to make a sparkledog character, I would force it into something anatomically beliveable. Thank yous so much! ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

RavingSpazz [2009-09-16 14:24:27 +0000 UTC]

Wow, I love how you actually developed an extra limb, rather than just sticking wings in his back, and you remembered to give him a leading edge, too! (Otherwise wing bones will snap in half.) My friend and I were just discussing how it seems that no one remembers that wings aren't just ornaments, haha. I can't say that I know if it would be possible for him to fly, though (even if his right wing wasn't deformed).

I also like how you gave him unique, and not necessarily badass/powerful traits (the overbite, the deformed wing, etc.) These make a character stand out and seem more realistic, so kudos to you!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Paperiapina In reply to RavingSpazz [2009-09-16 15:28:48 +0000 UTC]

Aww, thank yous! ^^ It's a matter of pride for me to make my fantasy creatures as beliveable anatomy wise as possible with the limitations I'm given. (Like with Liu, the RPG I'm aiming at is about winged wolves. Not the most realistic idea to begin with, but I do my best, if for nothing else, then just to brag about it.)
Well, I'm fairly certain, that even if Liu did exist in the real world, he probably could keep himself off the ground for a bit, but it wouldn't last long. Wolves aren't the most aerodynamic things on Earth, and I bet his hind half would probably drag. But even if he's not realistic, he's beliveable enough. ^^

By the way, do you know how exactly the thing with leading edge works? I know it's important to have it, and seeing wings drawn without it make my inner voice roar, I haven't ever read anything saying why it actually is so important. I'd love to know how the dynamics exactly go, theory wize. It protects the wing's arm bones from breaking?

Thank yous a lot!

I don't really know much about flying in regard to mammals that weren't built to fly (Plunder is a freaking genious with that, haha) so I was just trying to say that I wouldn't know if he could fly or not. But since they're so big, I'd hope he could! But yeah, then there's the adorable gimpy wing.

Excellent character~!!!

Yeah, Plunder really sounded like they know what they're talking about.

But thank yous so much! ^^ I'm glad my Liu is approved outside of the sparkledog fandom. ^^ (After all, he IS a wolf with wings.)

Just throwing in a comment, since you asked--

The "leading edge" basically functions as a "shock absorber" -- flying actually puts a lot more stress on joints than most people realize (and it's easy to see why - flying looks so gosh darned easy when we look at birds and bats)

The best example of how it protects the wing is, well, keeping it bent so that it can absorb the "impact" of flight better.

Imagine jumping off a table or something. Usually you bend your knees almost instinctively, right?

It's the same concept -- imagine an animal with no leading edge being like a person that jumps off of a fairly high ledge and keeps their legs absolutely straight.

What happens to them? They break their legs, or completely obliterate their kneecaps. Or both!

Generally speaking, you'll see more protopatagium (leading edge) in birds that are more maneuverable and don't rely mostly on soaring on wind currents to move about.

For instance; The soaring albatross vs the hawk or the common sparrow.

Leading edges can be much more difficult to find in birds... But chickens have them too! If you ever get the chance to look at a raw chicken wing, you can find it pretty easily. That's usually the area of the wing that ornithologists will tag, so the "flags" will hang over the bird's wing in a way that allows them to see the number when it's at rest.

For bats, which I guess Liu is based on, it's a little more complicated. But just for the sake of comparison, check out Tadarida australis vs Pteropus vampyrus in terms of where the edge begins and ends.
--------

Info dumping aside, I love Liu. He is an awesome guy, and I feel so bad for his little gimpy wing. :'D
His overbite is somewhat heart-warming, haha.

I also love his coat pattern! It's very unique without being garish, and it actually looks like something that you could easily expect to see on a dog.

The thought put into his biology just makes him stand out so much more -- in a good way -- than all those other "wolves with wings"!

Wow. O.O I don't know what to say except for huge thank yous! That was really helpful! It makes sense.

I have studied Han Moo Do couple of years ago, and I remember clearly how our teacher instructed us not to extend our arm completely when hitting someone/something. If you snap your arm straight, it's slower to pull back, is too stiff to react fast if the opponent decides to do do something, and if you put all your strength behind your hit and somehow miss, if you let your arm to straighten, it'll hurt, and possibly break your elbow joint, even if your opponent doesn't do anything to it.

Thank yous a bunch! ^^

Heh, I have strong reasons to believe that even if I was ever going to make a sparkledog character, I would probably force it to make sense too.

Plunder In reply to Paperiapina [2009-09-17 22:57:57 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, striking out with your arm is another great example! That "snapping" motion is a good correlation.

I'm glad I didn't confuse you, I was worried that I phrased that badly. 8D
