What a lovely story! And I know that movie too (actually a have a kind of collection of selkies tales since I have many books that include legends, tales and stories of them).
The selkies tales have several memes that I'm terribly interested in, such as marriage of a mortal with a supernatural being (always troublesome and full of misunderstandings), supernatural being held captive through the theft of a core item, shapes being more than they seem, love v.s. longing for the true home, etc.
Congratulations to Kiera for her lovely ballad. I specially liked the part:
“It wasn’t until she was gone that he finally he saw,
As wonderful as it had seemed, his plan possessed a flaw.
He had loved her because she was beautiful and because she was free,
But the only lover that she could know was the loveless sea”
And I think your picture portrays perfectly the melancholy of the Lady, whose heart is only free as long as her only love is “the loveless sea”. In accordance to that, she, alone, as she’s human among the seals who are in fact her companions and who pay attention to every move of hers, doesn’t look back at them but far away, facing the wind.
Such a lonely path of happiness…
Thank you for the lovely piece!
