[A/N’s: Warning: Foul language will be involved. Other than that, nothing too serious. Simply sit back, and enjoy the prologue for a series I will be starting~ I am excited and have many wonderful things planned for you Reader-chan! ]

Humans constantly wonder why situations occur. You are no exception. Like everyone else, you had been affected by the fall of Wall Maria. Your father had been a member of the Survey Corps, but the day he died was the day humanity was attacked by the Titans. That greatly affected you and your mother in many aspects.

You had decided to follow in your father’s footsteps, much to your mother’s disapproval. You had train three difficult years, so you would have the opportunity of joining the Survey Corps. After undergoing many strenuous trials, you had made it into the Survey Corps.

Being in this particular military branch had been difficult. You knew it would not be a journey full of glee, but never had you thought it to be so wearisome. Every mission you had seen your fellow comrades die in front of you. Many times you had been at the brink of Death’s door.

Two years have passed, you have survived. You are one of the few survivors of your graduated class. You have learned how to fend for yourself, but also how to work with the others. The enemy’s blood didn’t seem to bother you at all. Comrades dying was a whole other subject.

Everything has not been going great, but you were glad you and your mother were alive. Titans have not bothered the humans in those five years. You felt slightly satisfied with how things were going. That satisfaction did not last long... Life hit you hard once again, and gave a reminder: you live in a living Hell.

The Survey Corps were on the 56th Expedition outside the walls. Each soldier was bravely fighting in order to help humanity advance against the Titans. Their objective is to travel outside the walls, and find any lead that will aid humanity’s survival. Of course, not every soldier would live to see another day. Their comrades would make sure their deaths were not in vain. In the Survey Corps everyone is treated as equal. Each and every soul is important, and determination is greatly needed in order to survive.

Amongst these soldiers was a greatly determined soul, scouting the land. You would help anyone who asked for your aid. You would go where you were ordered to go. You were another soldier fighting for humanity’s sake.

You had been gliding over the rooftops for a while now. Not a single monster had been close to you, which you were greatly for, since you would not have been able to deal with a Titan alone. Ahead you see Major Hanji giving a scream of excitement as she is going straight towards a Titan.

You turn to your left, knowing Hanji didn’t need your help at all. (She seemed excited to go to battle all by herself anyway.) Peering forward you spot two Titans, oddly shaped ones in fact. Quickly, you glance around, hoping to see someone who could help you. No one seemed to be around... You take a quick breath, about to gather the courage to go into battle...

Suddenly, a small blur zips past you, flying towards your target.

“I’ll handle them,” a monotonous voice orders. “Go elsewhere.”

You nod, recognizing the Lance Corporal’s voice. Reluctantly, you leave, glancing behind you every so often, in case the Corporal needed any help. Once you were sure he didn’t need help, you go your own way.

You land on the rooftop of a building, your boots giving a small click. You lean back on the clock tower of the building, sighing. You needed to rest for a while. You had been flying around aimlessly, and you hadn’t found any other Titan. It’s almost as if they had all disappeared. There are many excellent soldiers in the Survey Corps, but could they have taken care of all of the Titans already?

The sound of wires are heard, and you look up to see a man of short stature standing in front of you. He puts up his blades and handles. He turns to you, eyeing you with the same phlegmatic stare he usually has.

Standing upright, you give the Lance Corporal a salute. “Sir. Are you doing well?”

Levi nods. “How about you? Any injuries?”

You stand straight up. “No sir. I’ve been patrolling just like you said, and haven’t encountered any other Titans.”

Levi gives a hum of satisfaction. Levi looks around, in case an enemy would be nearby.

“Sir?” you grab his attention again.

“Yeah?” Levi again turns to you.

“It’s been bothering me... Doesn’t there seem to be not that many Titans around? I guess it could be a good thing, but...” You pause for a while, recollecting your thoughts. “There are usually a lot of Titans roaming around in every mission we go to.”

“You’ve noticed as well, [Last]?” Levi asks. He turns to look at the uninhabited town. “We usually hear the wires in use, and puffs of smoke everywhere. Those hideous creatures better have finally realized they need to leave us the fuck alone.”

You observe the town as well. Most of the soldiers seem to have concentrated on helping the wounded, with a few on the rooftops, watching for any of the enemy. One or two were the sole soldiers in battle. You felt relieved the Titans weren’t bothering you today. All you wanted was to get home. Your mother was waiting to see you walking through the gate at Trost, and you wanted to see her again.

“[Last].” Levi calls out to you.

“Sir?” You await his orders.

Levi grabs the handles of his gear, and grasps them in his hands. “Keep watch from up here,” he orders. “Tell me if any of those shit-faces are approaching.”

“Yes sir.”

Levi gives you a slight nod. He turns to the wall to your left, and his wires shoot out, gliding him off of the rooftop. You stare at him as he walks towards Petra, who was trying to stop the bleeding of a dying soldier. The short Lance Corporal kneels down, before the dying soldier, leaning in a bit to hear him speak. The soldier reaches a hand out to the Corporal, with eyes full of sorrow. Levi grasps the dying soldier’s hand.

Levi seems to be speaking, but you are unable to hear. “...I’ll exterminate every single one of the Titans!” is the only thing you heard the Corporal say.

Petra’s eyes overflow with tears. Levi looks down at the deceased soldier then at Petra, who seem to be speaking to each other. You look at the dead soldier. He seemed to have a content look on his face. It was as if all of his worries were washed by Levi’s words. At least he was able to die peacefully.

You glance at Levi. ’He does so much for his comrades. It may seem he is harsh and unapproachable, but in reality he has helped so many soldiers...’

“Levi!” a voice yells.

You look over, watching Commander Erwin Smith approaching him on his beautiful, white horse. Levi turns to him.

“We’re going back,” Erwin orders.

“Back?” Levi questions in disbelief. You see his face change to a grim expression. “You want us to go back? I will not tolerate this Erwin. Do not make seem as my men have died needlessly”

Erwin does not seem to be intimidated by the short man’s terrifying glare. He remains still and calm. He answers, “All of the Titans have headed north, towards the walls.”

‘What? Not again...’ you gasp.

Erwin turns away from Levi. “It is a repeat of five years ago. The wall has been breached and the Titans are attacking humanity once again.” Erwin glances at Levi. “We can not stay here any longer.”

Levi glances at the dead soldier who had now been sent to a peaceful death. Levi gives out an irritated sigh. “Let us go then. We don’t need any more unnecessary deaths than there already are.”

Erwin nods, and turns away, riding off with two men trailing behind him. Levi mutters something to Petra. Petra nods, salutes, and gives out a “Yes, sir!” before running off to her duties.

Levi turns to you. He could see the worry written all over your face. You weren’t paying attention to your surroundings anymore. All you could think of was what could be happening at this very moment, back at the walls. Those walls which had been broken down, and taken over by Titans.

You stay rooted to your spot. It is as if you forgot how to move on your own. Fear paralyzed you. ‘How long have the Titans been over there?’ you ask yourself. ‘How many have been saved so far? How many soldiers have died?’

“[Last].”

You clenched your hands into tight fists. They began to tremble. ‘How many civilians are suffering this very moment? Will we be able to make it in time to save them?’

“[Last]!”

Tears well up on the brim of your eyes, trying to force themselves free. ‘How many people that I know of have died? Is... mom alright? Is she dead?’

All sorts of grim thoughts flood into your mind. You shake your head, to make the thought go away, but it doesn’t end up working. You can see the scene in your mind. Your mother would be frightfully staring into a Titan’s face. The Titan looks down at your mother, with a menacing grin on its face. Slowly, as if taunting your mother, the Titan reaches towards her. Your mother would be screaming, crying, trying to escape her unfortunate fate. In the Titan’s grasp, your mother would flail her arms around, giving out blood-curdling screams. The Titan would pay no heed, and bring its prey towards its mouth. The menacing grin would be wide open, ready to take a bite into human flesh. With one bite, your mother would be gone.

Breaking you away from your thoughts, a hand is placed gently on your shoulder. “Hey, [First],” the monotonous voice speaks. “You need to calm down.”

You turn towards your superior. Two pairs of steel-colored eyes are starting right at you. Levi seems to be glaring under those dark bangs, but in reality, he stares at you with concern.

Words don’t seem to form, and you utter senseless noises. You avoid Levi’s stare, glancing the other way. You didn’t want to cry in front of your superior. You didn’t want to feel weak. For heaven’s sake, you were soldier. It would be wrong to cry so easily. ...Right?

Levi places both of his hands on your shoulders, and grips you tightly, forcing you to look at him. “Look at me when I’m talking to you brat.”

The Lance Corporal receives a slight nod as a response. The young girl in front of him is staring at him, ready to listen to his every word.

Levi loosens his grasp on your shoulders. “I want you to take deep breaths. Concentrate on breathing, and nothing else. Forget about everything else for now.”

You do as he orders to. Your chest slowly rises as you inhale.

‘Alright, think of nothing else.’ You exhale.

...Inhale. ’I have a duty, and I must see it through.’

...Exhale. ‘Let nothing bother me.’

...Inhale. ‘Concentrate on breathing.’

...Exhale. ‘...Think of nothing else.’

You straighten your posture, showing more confidence than before. The tears have dried themselves away, and you can now think clearly.

The Lance Corporal notices your change in posture and facial expression. He gives you a pat on your shoulder, then his hands leave your shoulders. He gives you one final glance, making sure you are alright, then turns away, eyeing the situation.

“[Last], I want you ready the horses and rally up any stray soldiers,” Levi orders. “Notify them of the situation.”

You give a salute, and a loud “Yes, sir!”

Levi nods, acknowledging your newfound confidence. He grips the handles of his gear. You do the same, and aim the hooks of your wires to a nearby wall. Once the hooks are gripped tightly on a wall, the gas from your tanks, hisses, launching you from the roof. In turn, each hook grips on a wall, helping you fly through the abandoned town.

You give a melancholy sigh. ‘Again, I’m relying on others to help me. I wonder if the Corporal gets tired of helping a bother like me.’ You shake your head. ‘No, no. Only think positive thoughts. I can’t end here. I still have a home to go to!’

You may have been planning to get back to the walls safely, back to your mother...

...but other plans were awaiting you.
