Claire was a little nervous about her first chiropractic appointment, but the chiropractor came highly recommended and he even had his own YouTube channel, so she knew he was the real deal.
They talked about her chronic neck and shoulder issues, about how she had trouble turning her head most mornings, ever since high school. He did a through exam, even took x-rays and reviewed the results with her. He said her issues were due to a ‘locked C-4 Vertebrae’ and with a few sessions of adjustments, he could definitely fix her.
She lay on her back on his table and he began manipulating her head and neck, gently at first. He moved her this way and that, making slight adjustments and talking her through it step by step.
“Now I’ve got you lined up, so this one is going to make a loud ‘pop’ - it’s not breaking or snapping anything, the sound is just air escaping, nothing more. Don’t be alarmed.”
Claire agreed and felt his strong hands moving her head slowly to the left, then there was a very sudden wrenching motion up and to the right. Claire heard the loud ‘crack’ noise and her shoulder tension instantly loosened. She let out a gasp.
“I definitely feel better!” She said, “but is the dizziness and the tingling in my fingers normal after an adjustment? I hadn’t heard about that one...”.

In the hospital, the orthopedic surgeon explained that while the adjustment hadn’t fractured anything, it had pinched and severed about half the nerve bundle that carried messages to the rest of Claire’s body, leaving her partially paralyzed from the upper chest down. She had lost almost all feeling and movement from her abdomen down, though she could still feel some vague sensations of pressure on her right side, and had lost some hand and arm function as well - more on the left, where her hand was almost totally useless. The chiropractor deflected the blame, of course, insisting that she had a pre-existing condition... as she was measured for her new wheelchair she just didn’t have the energy to think about the upcoming lawsuit...
Life after her ‘adjustment’ was just one adjustment after another. Learning to live as a quadriplegic, learning to do normal everyday tasks only having partial use of one hand... life in a wheelchair. There were more bad days than good ones, at first... but that slowly started to shift....
She eventually fell in love with a beautiful nurse, and her mom walked her down the aisle in her wheelchair. They vacationed in a fully accessible resort in Jamaica, and when the concierge asked them if they would like to sign up for a beachside chiropractic massage, they both yelled ‘no!’ In unison...
