Hey cool man. Honestly I would sort of get caught in this trap of doing studies or little bits and pieces of things my first few months drawing and it would sort of never get me fully started on a real path to my goals.
Sketching is good and doing studies is also good. Just go for some totally finished pieces. It will take a little longer (like maybe a couple days or a week maybe depending on how detailed or complicated it is.) but you are going to work through a lot more problems and it will test everything that doing sketches and studies will accomplish plus you'll learn to do full layouts of a drawing and most importantly to complete things from start to finish.
at first it's not about quality as much as getting a piece from the beginning to the end...then you build out from there.
cool studies either way.
just a thought.

"just a thought." Well, that's exactly the kind of thoughts I need to hear(read). I've only ever really completed like two or three of my non-school sketches. I like the idea and am gonna go with it. Can't wait to see what I'm capable of!
cheers.
