night passed and dawn arrived. They were on their way back towards the Tree, having stopped near Willow Valley for the night to rest and drop off the injured.

...Kenny was part of the injured. Right. He'd already begun the process of expertly ignoring the limp, broken and torn stump of a tail dragging behind him, and it hadn't even been a day. He just felt like he needed to *do something*. To do *more*. He'd been heavily concussed and his head had not even fully recovered, but he'd still been wandering around and trying to help, according to everyone else.

He didn't even remember it. Everything was so hazy, it was all such a blur.

And it was too little, too late.

The part he could remember was trying to help, once again. He'd seen Hetro get knocked down, and even though he was not in any shape to help, he'd rushed forwards anyways, but tripped over something. It was an eerily familiar plush doll, burnt and torn to shreds. He'd paused to pick it up, mystified, and then had been grabbed and dragged away by other folk. He knew he shouldn't blame them, they were only trying to help.

but instead, their efforts led to this. To him being only able to watch.

he could have gotten up there. He'd done it before, twice. Once Hetro was falling, it was over, and he knew it. That flying folk tried their best, but something in him informed him coldly, 'too little, too late. Too fast, too low.' And sure enough, the only thing the poor folk accomplished was nearly getting themselves a broken arm or wing, too.

he heard bones crunch when the beast slammed its hoof into Hetro's broken leg.

he didn't hear anything else over the blood in his ears. vague impressions of screaming, worried murmuring and he could only watch, under strict surveillance due to his multiple escape attempts.

he could only watch.

he could only watch.

he had snuck off again. He was so tired. He had a pounding headache from yesterday, both from the fighting and from a mild existential crisis a deer folk may or may have not have given him. He had had his world shattered into a million tiny pieces, crushed more and more into a fine dust by circumstance. God, his tail was gone. His tail- his tail was gone!

a peal of hysterical giggles escaped his throat despite him. His tail! It was gone! And somehow that was the least concerning part about all of this! That's just... insane! This is all insane! He's...

Kenny watched the sun begin to rise.

And he watched the stars fall.
