How did you isolate the color in PhotoShop I'm trying to teach myself

My guess is she used an adjustment layer for tuning the hair color and applied a layer mask to it, adjusting its shape with a brush to fit the hair shape.

I made a duplicate layer in black and white and erased the part of her hair to show the color layer underneath. The end. ^.^
