If I remember correctly, training w/ Roshi was after the Pilaf saga, where Goku got his tail cut.

Interesting, I didn't think about Goku's tail. I went off the reanimated Dragonball footage in Dragonball Super, and Goku didn't actually have a tail in that. I'm not sure if that was a mistake on the animators part or not.
