I just ask fairly simple questions like when will mum get back home or will I get any productive work done today. Sometimes it works It really depends on how much you read into the symbols. Like when I asked when mum would be home the first symbol it pointed to was the chameleon which suggests patience, so I guess I should just be patient

That's awesome! I really want one. Preferably a giant one I can lug around everywhere. Haha!

And I totally agree. I mean, the visuals were gorgeous but what movie doesn't have those nowadays? I don't know why directors even bother turning books into movies when many of them don't even try to capture the spirit of the original.

Haha! Yeah, I mean the movie didn't even finish the way it did in the book. I remember going to see it when it came out and I was so annoyed at the ending.

It's from Philip Pullman's book series 'His Dark Materials'. The compass belongs to Lyra Belacqua and she uses it to help her find her friend.

Basically you ask it a question by turning the three red points to the appropriate picture. You have to think of things that each picture could symbolize; so the serpent could mean evil, the sand timer could mean time but it has a skull on top of it so it could also mean death, owl for wisdom and so on and so forth. It answers you by turning the blue arrow to three separate pictures you then have to decipher what the answer is through the symbols

Sounds rather confusing and takes quite a bit of practice but it's great fun. :L
