Ah, well, but you see, "flattery" to me is a negative thing. I was saying something nice about you.
The term "flattery" is a word that is used in different ways by different people. But in its strictist sense, to flatter someone is to compliment a person in an effort to gain the person's favor. For instance, I might say something to my boss like, "Wow, you look great in that suit!" only so that I might improve my chances for getting a promotion in the company. Or I might flatter a girl in hopes of, well, let's say gaining her affection.
I'm telling you these things because I'm a know-it-all and I'm always telling people things that they really have no interest in. And I would like to point out that your use of "flattering" is not a matter of someone who speaks English as a second language choosing the wrong word. If I chose twenty Americans in a room then seventeen of them would not know the strict meaning of "flattery."
So, the point of all this nonsense is that i wasn't intending on flattering you, only of saying something nice. And of making an honest observation. Unless, of course, you can get me that promotion . . . .
