Description Something completely different, a fairly quick armor concept. I like to doodle these first thing in the morning to get the brain-juices flowing, or before going to bed to clear my head from superfluous ideas. Most of them are around 30 minute-quickies, but this one was a few hours of custom brushes and general brainstorming.

I tend to only upload these concepts onto my personal FB (facebook.com/patrik.bjorkstrom.illustration) so if you're feeling up for random doodles, make sure to add me there.

Yes, this is different.. and very intense too.
You mean you go to sleep after one of these?

I like the collar, I think that's what it is. Wrapping around the neck and shoulders. Also menacing.

Thanks, that's actually one of my favourite parts about the design as well, the collar, that is

Thanks! Learning new techniques can be a lot of fun, plus it's an awesome way to break up old routines ^^

You're welcome!

That is true. I'm trying to use more textures and detail in my drawings. I also learned how to apply color when on greyscale it's great for clothing and stuff like that but man it frustrates me on skin tone..

Ah, you talking about adjustment layers? It's a bit easier once you figure a few of them out, like you said with applying colors to a value sketch for example, but a lot of the time it's just guesswork. Sometimes I even find cool, surprising effects

Not really adjustment layers, but using overlay, soft light, multiply, etc on normal layers to add color without losing the shading done in greyscale. Yeah I learned the hard way on how much guessing it takes to get what I want just right XD Clothing and hair was fine but when it got to the skin tone I had so many different layers. I was having trouble getting that natural look. It was either too dull, too vibrant, too much of one color, too little of another color, etc

I'm getting better with using textures but I'm still trying to develop patience for details. The newest drawing I did has more detail than what I was originally going to put. Instead of just a plain coat, I added gold borders/trimmings/detailing (I don't know what to call it XD) on it. The one thing that was really troubling me was my Photoshop CS4.. for some reason the brush strokes are very jagged and not fine (it also lags a bit no matter what the file or brush size is) at all no matter what adjustments to the brush I make. But when I use a different program like Paint Tool SAI, the brush strokes are fine. Is there a way to fix the photoshop program or should I try to get a newer program like CS5 or CS6?

Well to me at least details are both good and bad, they're interesting to work on, but can also devour countless of hours which could be spent more constructively. Odd to hear about your PS troubles though. I'm not exactly sure what you mean with jagged brushstrokes, to me that sounds like a brush feature sort of, or like brush opacity is on 100% full time without pen pressure enabled. The lagging can be very annoying though. Makes me wonder if it has it been this way from the beginning and if you're drawing on a laptop or a desktop, and maybe specs in general. Alternatively, it could be the result of some bad/faulty tablet drivers. On my previous desktop my wacom drivers would occasionally, for no apparent reason, simply die and some default windows tablet drivers kicked in instead, making my brushstrokes lag to the point where I couldn't draw. I can almost guarantee that the problem does not lie within CS4 specifically, but if you want you can always try a trial version of say CS6 and see if there's a difference. P.S. I have no experience at all with Paint Tool SAI, so can't comment on that.

Lol that is true..

Ok so lets say you're just using a basic round brush and you draw a curved line with it. Well instead of it running smoothly, it lags and comes out looking like you just tried to use the line tool to create a curve. It's not a smooth, nice stroke that it's supposed to be, and it makes it harder to create nice brush strokes on a drawing. Keep in mind that this happens on every brush I use, no matter what I do with the settings. I don't remember if it's always been this way but I am drawing on a desktop.
I actually had to get a new tablet because the drivers wouldn't work at all. But this tablet works completely fine on other software. Though once it gets to CS4 it just.. doesn't seem right. I'm not saying that the problem is in CS4, it's just odd that the brush seems funny in it. I don't believe it's ever happened in CS2.. Though I could be wrong since I last used CS2 a year ago

That does indeed sound odd, don't think I've experienced anything like you're describing before. If you've still got access to CS2, I'd suggest try going back to that just to see if the same behavior happens. Or like I suggested, try the evaluation version of CS6, pretty sure there is one out there. Out of curiosity, what tablets are you using?

Vyndicare In reply to Patriartis [2014-08-01 16:04:47 +0000 UTC]

Okay, I'll try doing both. Oh and I'm using a small Wacom Intuos (I think that's how it's spelled XD)

I like it too I had a Bamboo before but it wasn't the best.. It kept glitching no matter what I did.

Ah, that's sad. I've heard a lot of nice things about them although they have less pressure points.

Vyndicare In reply to Patriartis [2014-08-03 07:59:46 +0000 UTC]

Yeah.. First the chord for it was messed up even though it was new. Then the driver itself wasn't working. The tablet just wouldn't respond. So I got a new one
