Description First Mechanical Homunculus completed! Another piece I will submit for this summers Steampunk art show in Sacramento. I wanted this series to have a mix of Steampunk and arcane magic. Though it would be easier and more practical to build a personal spy/thief using an automaton of copper and brass metal works instead of just flesh and blood. Homunculus is contained in a Glass Cloche, sits on a base of brass etched with containment spells. It is approximately 9.5 inches high, 5.5 inches across and weighs about 1 lb 5 ozs. Fabricated from Brass, Copper, Watchparts, Century old Skeleton key, and glass.

For some reason I think homunculi should be cute due to their size

Alchemy fits well with steampunk, I believe. Great work here.

My pleasure.
Next I will do a steampunk product-shoot for a DA-friend. He will create a steampunk corset especial for me. Do you are interested to show one of your jewelery on this?
Send me a note or mail.

Hey SenoritaPepita!
Lemme know the time frame for completion and what you had in mind in the way of jewelry. Just sent some stuff to Germany and it took about 3 weeks to get there from California!
Thanks!

Sure! What did you have in mind? What kind of critter would work with your corset? Spider or wasp?
Thanks!

I will let you know if I know how the corset will look like.
Didn't know at the moment because it's not even finished.
When I know how it looks, I'll think of other accessoires.

Thanks for your interest

That is absolutely awesome!
I love the way you can recognize different pieces of the figure and identify them as something!
Great concept And the glass bell absolutely makes this piece!

Thanks! I really need to get my butt in gear and finish all the pieces laying around my house. Probably after the Halloween costumes are finished! Much obliged for the props!

Nice. Where'd you get the bell jar/cloche?

Paul-Nasca In reply to ChiBurbs [2011-09-10 20:01:24 +0000 UTC]

Ahh those are a pain to get! I will buy them on the rare occasion on ebay. I have found some distribution sites that sell them for reasonable prices for the smaller ones. I have switched to using clear acrylic tubes. I found a local supplier that sells the left over tubes for cheap. Tapp sells them for $42 a foot which is outrageous!

I LOVE this. He is so expressive somehow, without having actual facial features... you either got very lucky or you have real talent (I suspect the latter).

Hee hee. Probably more luck. The first head was judged as "really cute" by my wife so it was promptly put aside for another project!

It's so amazing that you are able to do such a piece of art! I like it also because of my hobby, which is learning about alchemy.

Why, why, why?! Why, I can't have something like that on my shelf? D:

Thanks! They seem easier to make than having to use some of your soul, flesh, and blood for a conventional homunculus! Some very interesting historical examples from the middle ages too. Keep up the alchemical studies!

I find the idea very original and well executed too! A nice curiosity one can add to one's collection.

I just think that the elven lettering from Lord of the Rings seems a little unfitting, considering that there is no steampunk at all in Tolkien's work.
btw: what do the words say?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Paul-Nasca In reply to MerlinTheRed [2011-04-05 09:21:49 +0000 UTC]

Hee hee. The elvish type lettering is part of the mix of sorcery and Steampunk automaton. I use another font that is very choppy and almost looks like a pictograph. I was afraid the choppy font looks too much like random scratches so I used the font that is clearly letters. The base says something akin to, "Do not lift the glass! Will Bite!" The outside ring has general protection sayings. I think that run of etching has such things as "Don't run with scissors", "Look both ways before crossing the street", "Wash your hands before dinner" etc. Makes me laugh every time I think about good ol' mom advice used in protection incantations... Anyway glad you liked it. Now I only have to get the other 12 finished!

I was puzzled about the elven runes as well, but... "Don't run with scissors", that's ingenious! a beautiful work like that shouldn't be able to become that much better by just adding this, but... it did. it is now really truly awesome.

Paul-Nasca In reply to Eirieniel [2011-04-15 17:36:59 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I was going to use another font but it looked too much like random scratching. I did not want it to be mistaken for bad etching on my part!
