Congratz on the DD,even though this one is by far a piece of your artwork that deserved it the least which makes the benefits of a DD powder into thin air.
I´ve taken a little tour through the gallery and nearly every piece I looked at would´ve been far more approopriate for a DD,let alone pulling more and the right kind of attraction.
This one is -unless that´s intended which by watching up close I highly doubt- slapdashily executed work at best, looking rather like a beginners practising piece or maybe quickly, very quickly testing a new tablet, with lots of good will.
That all refers to the use of [what I assume] given tools, the rather technical side of leveraging Photoshop as one and a graphics tablet as another tool.Had this been done with a mouse, things would look significantly different;but,my,oh,my,the 'Artist´s Comments' or description (although stretching that term quite far on what I see there) doesn´t tell us if so - which, unfortunately,is another minus on the fairly poor decision of awarding this piece out of them all a DD,a place on the very frontpage,an Academy Award of dA,the by far largest art website on the world.
Now to the more enjoyable part of this critique -for there sure is one- and an even more important reason to give us more than just a blunt "Painted in Photoshop" e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="220" title="Bleh"/> as the Artist´s Comment:
When I´m talking about a lack of technical execution,I have to point out [again] that this only refers to the use of tools, let´s say what we see in Fullview. The brushstrokes,if you will, how it was done.
Looking at this piece from the technical side, this time considering WHAT
you have done, light, colors, values, conveyance of form,depth,athmosphere,mood...I must say that this work is far,far beyond of anything that I -in most self-consciuos consideration of all I know and who I am as an artist- could ever dare to judge.
When it comes to this side of the technical view, the "Eyeguy" and all that forms this piece,is to stand bold and proud in the dA hall of fame, amongst all the other DDs given.
But what,in the end, earned this piece a DD (as I believe),what gives it every reasonable right to stand proudly in the middle of the frontpage,is the subject.
The sheer amount of "What the HECK am I seeing there!?" at first glance, evolving to an astonished "How in the world does someone come up with-" ,to put it poetically the boasting, unleashed imagination and creativity this piece offers,is simply overwhelming.
It is what makes "Eyeguy" a truly great piece of fine art, and, should you give in to me beseeching you to overwork -not to be mistaken with redo- this piece,to refine the hard edges (you´ll know what I mean when I say this is to be taken literally in a way and which your other art shows you´re perfectly capable ofe.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/w… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="387" title=" (Wink)"/>),a full masterpiece.

DRS, Thanks for your careful consideration of my "Eyeguy" piece. I'll try to clarify a few things here:
I painted this with a magic mouse on my iMac. Due to deteriorating eyesight, I'm pretty sloppy in almost every way, and when technical virtuosity is required I give it my best effort (praise the zoom tool), especially when my "master printer" is making a large expensive archival print. He catches all the defects and inconsistencies and insists that I clean them up before any printing happens.
Regarding "Eyeguy", this was really just a color sketch that I was playing with, putting things together, trying out this and that. There was no concept other than maybe a glass of ginger ale terrarium that turned into a character because frankly the glass, liquid, and foliage were clumsy and lifeless. So I added an eyeball. and another, a gentile smile, and the little sidekick on the left. I liked the goofy and playful surreal result. Rather than refining it, I was eager to do a test printing on the Deviant site of this and a couple others to see if I could get decent color on both photo print and fine art print. I am happy with the results. (I'm looking at a 18x 24 photo print and I can see what you mean. Yikes!
I may yet refine it, especially if I get a request for a 30x40ish archival ink print.
Otherwise, it will remain an eye-catching slapdash folly and fertilizer for my whimsy.
Thanks again, Paul

Well, this of course leaves pretty much the first part of my critique rather pointless,as I said:
[...]Had this been done with a mouse, things would look significantly different;[...]
Under the circumstances you describe, the technical aspect I talked about in the first half was done just as good as you could without going frenzy and spending 300 hours on it.But indeed you pointed out that it was rather a sketch, which of course pushes the second half even more on the foreground.I couldn´t come up with sketches that were even half as good.
It but also keeps the decision of awarding a DD questionable, which of course doesn´t bother you but the one who awarded it.
The critique point that remains is but this one:
"but,my,oh,my,the 'Artist´s Comments' or description (although stretching that term quite far on what I see there) doesn´t tell us if so -[...]"
Come on,you can do more than that

I love the composition and the weird subject matter. Although your painting style is a little smudgier than I usually like.
