Description Sometimes, my friend, Thom and I like to go to Ska shows to people watch and laugh. This is based off a photo I took at one such ska show.
They are doing the "skank" dance. ha.

ps: I've dubbed these two: Skrinkle (left) and Scruffles (right)

Ska is the national music of Jamaica. The first Ska song was recorded in 1959, called "Easy Snappin." Ska originates from the islands as a mix of their tribal Mento and Calypso styling and is heavily influenced the the rock and blues they would pick up on their transistor radios from Florida broadcasts. You can identify Ska from the emphasis on the up beat originally using an organ or piano, as recently as the mid sixties a guitar. A horn section normally accompanies a traditional Ska band.

The music was the first completely original style of music to come from Jamaica and they used it to celebrate their independence from the British empire, and later on to mock and criticize their corrupt government.

Most raggae musicians started their roots in traditional Ska, including Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff and Bob Marley. While some consider the term Raggae to be interchangeable with Ska, traditional raggae did not emerge as a prominent musical genre until the early seventies, a full decade after the birth of Ska.

Ska has gone through three revivals since it's inception. The first revival known as "Second Wave" or the "Two Tone Movement" (1980s) saw Ska mixed with heavy punk influences. The Clash are especially notable in the influence Ska had them, especially in songs like "Rudie Can't Fail." Great examples are The Specials, The English Beat and The Selecter. The second revival is "third wave" (1990s) in which Pop punk was mixed in with slight Ska influences. Notable examples are Less than Jake, Reel Big Fish and No Doubt.
"Fourth Wave" (late 1990s - Now) Ska is undoubtedly a return to roots with bands like The Slackers, Westbound Train and Deals Gone Bad leading the forefront of this musical styling, getting rid of the more punk influences and adopting more tradition mento beats.

Many punk bands, like Rancid are also heavily influenced by Ska and in turn, Raggae.

Streetlight Manifesto is not Ska.

Someone had asked what Ska was, you gave them an incorrect answer. I mended the honest mistake, sorry?

It's just funny because you're answering a question that was asked two years ago and didn't even put it in the thread where it was asked.

My answer was brief but it's still pretty accurate. I didn't think a wikipedia-like history of ska was necessary but thanks for caring so much.

You know, when I saw the thumbnail for this piece I thought the guy was Jimmy Stewart. Regardless, good job with their faces. Even the little folds of their earlobes look good.

That chick has some interesting hair. :0 I like it.
I'm not sure what a Ska show is though. And of course Wikipedia fails me.
But it looks like fun! I like the guy's outfit too, haha. Buttons on the suspenders. Nice.
The people in the background look like they're having a good time too!

PawnAttack In reply to Pith-sama [2009-02-10 23:18:17 +0000 UTC]

You looked up Ska and couldn't find a definition? Thats weird. It's a genre of music that mixes reggae and punk and throws in some brass instruments. All the music is formulaic to the same or similar tempo and horn line. The dance that goes with it is called "Skanking". lol. You can look it up on youtube.
The only Ska band I can really recommend to you is The Aquabats. They're more entertaining than most. Some famous ones are Reel Big Fish and Less Than Jake. I'm sure you'll find they're pretty similar.
Regardless it's a pretty funny scene.

Well I looked up Ska, but I wasn't sure if that's what you meant. So I didn't say anything, lawl.
And I will definitely look that up on youtube. I'm interested as to what 'skanking' looks like in motion. ;0
Haha, okay, maybe I'll give them a listen. I actually think I've heard the band name 'The Aquabats' before. Can't say I've ever heard their music though. Oh well, I'll look that up on youtube too. :>
