This one I just find wholesome, I don't know why. It would be impossible to imagine Gordon sharing his express with anyone (except for the times he did, lol), let alone being friends or loving an engine meant to do that, but that's why it's so novel to me. It also has to do with Rebecca not understanding some things Gordon says, and gordon eventually overcoming it. I'm going to do something I've strayed from doing somewhat and share a bit of Gordon and Rebecca's relationship in my AU. Gordon is in the later stages of his life when Rebecca arrives, and while he's fine to share the express with Richard and Spencer, he feels more threatened by Rebecca than he has by any other steam engine because Rebecca's class were incredibly experimental but still successful nonetheless, and adding Gordon's pride in his heritage and that Rebecca is much more modern when compared to Gordon, he believes this newcomer will overshadow him, and so is cold towards her. Meanwhile Rebecca, who was actually built in 1948 after the railways were nationalized, doesn't fully understand why Gordon keeps making remakes about the Souther Railway, or why he believes she would replace him. In actuality, Rebecca has had nothing but respect for Gordon long before she arrived. She feels indebt to him because he was the first successful Pacific locomotive and without him, she would never have been built. So Rebecca constantly tries to prove herself to Gordon, only to keep falling down when the many flaws in her design keep holding her back. It's only when Richard, a former Southern express engine himself, takes Rebecca under his wing and informs Gordon on Rebecca's true thoughts on him. Gordon begins to treat her better, and finds her cute and instinctally defends her, and you can guess what happens from there.
