Description Remember this ? Weeeelll

From chapter 10 onwards, I plan to have A LOOOOOT of reference art lying around (just by sheer number of things to design in Slateport city ALONE). Due to the nature of my day job, I get exposed to alot of style guides and production manuals, so all of my personal reference sheets have taken on a cool level of polish and it'd be a shame to just sit on these. Especially when i've been promising you all more sketchdumps anyway.

And so, it starts!

P.S What I originally thought was a waste - that being the model sheets - ended up being the best investment of my time in the past couple years or so. It made drawing everyone SO easy. Seriously if you have the means, do some of theeseeee.Β

OH heck behind the scenes stuff aw yes. All these meticulous designs for the places the individualized items, and characters are so lovely!! And I really like how you’re keeping notes on everyone’s design and what makes them consistent is really cool to see this process!

I might as well try some model sheets they look fun and simple to do

THANKS!! It's so tedious but so much fun too. Especially when you manage to make everyone unique in some way despite worrying you might not be able to. Speaking mostly to the troupe here, a group of kids who are largely all positive bundles of joy. So trying to figure out what brand of positivity and how to differentiate that visually from the others was what took the most time. In the end, it all worked out.Β
For instance, Solana fits in well with any sort of friend group so she's very fluid in shape, while Mikael is easily excitable but can have a hard time with others because of his constant energy - hence why he's shaped like an exclamation point, something that when seen in a sentence instantly takes it to a new level of obnoxious for us subconciously.Β

You should totally do model sheets like this, and keep them printed near you (I have these in a little booklet next to me when i work) Β

If you're doing ones where you have to come up with shapes for characters, it definitely helps to exaggerate/make solid decisions on shapes and then wittle them down if your style depends less on characters being so wild in their silhouettes. That way you have a strong base and lots of room to work from Β

oh gosh you did a wonderful job at that showing their distinct positive traits and deigns (It's nice to see that they don't necessarily all stick to the same 'friendly' design you know? and still pertain their personality and bubbliness. Exclamation mark Mikael is very wholesome though I support his obnoxious excitement!

that is such a good idea!! It crossed my mind to print them out, but now it sounds pretty helpful! Oh man that's so cool! a little booklet of refs!Β Β

ah thank you for the tip! I'll try it out! strong base and then details hm..

AAAA thanksss ;;A;; Also sorry for the super late reply!

You should totally print them out! Doesn't even have to be a booklet. Whatever format helps you understand the concepts more. Poster, trading cards, looll Something accessible and concise to keep near really comes in handy when it comes to cutting down on guessing work.

And no prob! Hope it works out for you

AAAAA, thank you!! And same! It's always nice to see the specific process behind things, and I want to give as much insight to the "improvement" portion of this project as possible. So i'm really glad you enjoyed it! Hopefully I'll get to indulge in this again pretty soon after chapter 11's out Β
