Description "Legend has foretold the coming of a seventh Toa, who will bring light to the shadows and awaken the Great Spirit!"

Here's a little something I've been toying around with for a while and now feel satisfied enough with to post.  It's Takanuva, the Toa of Light... now in Garry's Mod!

Someone created a perfect replica of the Kanohi Avohkii as a mod replacement for Soldier's Bill Hat in Team Fortress 2, and it has since been ported to SFM and GMod.  Of course, while someone else made (not-so-perfect, but still quite nice) Matoran models of Takua and Macku, there has been no other models available for recreating our nostalgic plastic construction toy-filled childhoods.

And when that happens, it's time to get creative!

My first "draft" of this involved the human RED Medic wearing an assortment of different cosmetic items to bulk himself up and look a little more like a Toa, including Das Metalmeatencasen, the Ward, and Quick Fix, while the Staff of Light was constructed from a mishmash of different weapons.  I called it the GMod equivalent of a "sketch", since I was just "doodling" and seeing what happened.  There were some things that I liked; I chose the Medic because his white coat made me think of a Gandalf The White-esque robe that Takanuva could wear, and Das Metalmeatencasen made for good armor.  However, being a "sketch", it was very messy and, if it were to work, would need a serious reskinning job and my knowledge of reskinning Source models is nonexistant.

I later came up with another "sketch" , this time using the trailer-themed gray reskin of the Robot Medic.  This worked tremendously in my favor, since the robot body already looked far more like a Toa's anatomy than the human counterpart ever could, and the gray reskin resembled Takanuva's white armor without being diluted by red or blue.  Additionally, using the Robot Eye Glow tool, I could recreate Takanuva's yellow eyes.  I also kept Das Metalmeatencasen from the previous sketch, since it provided a bit of extra bulk that was much needed to emulate Takanuva's armor.  When trying to think of how to solve the problem of shoulder armor, I was inspired by the unorthodox uses of Kanohi pieces as armor in the Makuta and Maxilos sets and tried using additional Avohkii masks for shoulder armor.  I liked what I saw, but unfortunately the Avohkii and Das Metalmeatencasen did not match in color.

I did a bit more "sketching" and eventually found that, using the color tool, the Avohkii and Das Metalmeatencasen could be tinted a darker gold color that, while could not make them match exactly, made them a lot closer in hue (the color values are 255/227/151/255).  I also constructed a new Staff of Light that was much simpler than my first sketch, constructed from just the Maul and Fortified Compound, but also more closely resembled the original set.

All that remained was putting Takanuva in a cool pose in some unlit corner of Clocktown producing a beam of light from his hand.  And that, my friends, is what you see here today.

It's come a long way since the initial sketch model, and I'm very pleased with the final result.  I'm sure there's some other nostalgic fans out there who will appreciate this.

EDIT: Looks like we've been reblogged!

Garry's Mod belongs to Garry Newman.  Team Fortress 2 belongs to Valve.  BIONICLE belongs to The LEGO Group.

Do you know where we can find the Mask of Light for SFM?

No, but I do know that you can find the Mask of Light for GMod , then use this method to import it into SFM, if that helps.

Mentioned this in the comment above, but in a rather annoying case of false advertising, the gray skin is not actually included in that addon.  I just downloaded it and checked to be sure.

Nifty. Not perfect, but not horrible either.

There's a mod floating around that replaces RoboMedic's wheel with RoboSniper's legs. Might that enhance the Takanuva look.

I could certainly try something with this. Perhaps if you made the ragdoll and model a Dupe and put it on the Workshop, it could be easy for others to p (as long as they have the Mask of Light and reskinned Medic models, of course).

I considered using the legged Robot Medic, but unfortunately the only workshop addon containing that modded Robot Medic only includes the red and blue skins and no the trailer-themed gray skin.  Besides, with a little cheating in perspective and framing, I'm able to hide that this Takanuva model has only one leg.

Unfortunately, the problem with making this Takanuva a workshop dupe is that, like the Rock Monster in "Black Mesa Rock Raiders", there's a bit of smoke and mirrors going on here.  For instance, the Avohkii is not attached to the Medic's face, but floating in mid-air in front of it.  This means that its position is largely a case-by-case scenario determined by what looks best for the camera angle.  Similarly, the shoulderpads are positioned where they look best for a certain angle.  On top of that, there's a weird glitch involving using the color and bonemerging tools that causes the entire Medic model to turn gold-tinted but only if you're using the camera tool and not the handheld camera... in other words, it's a mess.

Which is why I listed out in great detail everything one would need to know to construct their own Takanuva in Garry's Mod!  Provided, of course, they know about the "prop_dynamic_create" console command required to make Das Metalmeatencasen able to be colored...
