I'm guessing it must be loud, but you were far away too.
On the Apollo 4 [I think, it was one of the early ones] NASA hadn't built muffelers on the rockets to make them quiet, and during the launch the sound waves actually tore off the roof of a news platform. I read it in Guiness Book of World Records 2000.

it's quite a site. The night shots where they send up satellites are very, very impressive. The entire sky lights up .. as though it were daytime .. and you can see it for much, much longer than one of the shuttle daylight liftoffs. I literally stood in the river to get this view point, which is ok if I watch out for stingrays and other varmits! bwhahahaha
