Description
A rotovap is a device used in chemistry to apply vacuum to volatile compounds. Simply put, a rotovap is used to remove a liquid solvent from a substance in order to obtain a pure solvent. Rotovaps are also referred to as rotary evaporators or vacuum rotary evaporators. A rotary evaporator or rotovap is a vacuum distillation device used to concentrate solutions by removing water or other volatile liquids by distillation. In a rotary evaporator, the separation is accomplished by spinning a vessel containing the liquid in a vacuum, which causes the volatile components to be removed from the liquid at a much higher rate than in a standard distillation. A rotovap is used to quickly remove volatile liquids such as water, ethanol, acetone, etc. Rotovaps are typically used in chemistry labs, but they can also be used to remove water from marijuana tinctures and concentrates. For example, a rotovap can be used to remove the solvent from THC oil in order to create a wax or shatter.
