Hello! I am here from
It's a pleasure to be able to come in and say a few things about your wonderful art work!

First things that comes to mind is that this is a care-free character with a touch of mischievousness. And you were able to convey that message very nicely through character design, colour palette and his body language. I like the roughed-in border in the background as well; it's a very nice touch! The thick outlines actually work towards the design and gives the character a whimsical look. Finally, which I don't fully understand the "Fun facts", I think you've got a pretty good start on character development as well. It might have been nice to see his tattoos!

Now, how to make this character even better?
One thing I noticed is that he has a very strong "reflective factor" on his face. Everything on his face glows (and it's highly reflective due to the strong white highlights.) But the same can't be said about the rest of him. If he's supposed to be shiny, shouldn't he be shiny everywhere instead of just the face? So if the character has strong white highlights on his face (and some in his hair), he should have them everywhere as well; especially the translucent wings. The lighting direction in this picture is also a little jumbled up as well. From the head, it looks like the lighting source is upper right (viewers' left) corner. But if you look down to his body, it looks like the light comes from lower left (viewers' right) side. Sometimes it helps to keep the lighting direction in mind when you start to colour your characters to avoid troubles like this in the future. And finally... I think I see a fur trim on his sleeves. I have a feeling that his coat collar and boots are also trimmed in fur. You may want to add to the fur texture to make sure they actually show up the way you want them to. I think it's a nice design element on him, but we have to be able to see it!

Overall, I like the character and he seems to be very nicely put together. All the very best with him and with your art in the future! Keep up the good work!

Thank you so much for your insightful comment! I intend to do more developed "regular" style art and explain his character a bit more, but no one's ever asked about any of the written detail I ever posted on Instagram and I never thought much of it, so thank you for reading aha! (Alastair is actually my avatar, albeit that being one of his incarnations)

Since I'm transitioning into a more balanced production of digital and traditional, I tend to forget how traditional highlights translate into a digital piece! Thanks for pointing out the irregularities - I realise I'm not used to adding the "final touches" in digi yet as it's easier with white gel pen! On the topic of the shiny factor, it's a lot less noticeable when I do it traditionally, so I will bear in mind to make sure I use it overall or not at all when going for simplicity. Aha, the dreaded light source! I will definitely keep in mind the direction of light since overall I find the piece a bit dull - focused highlights would absolutely help!

I did go in and add some rough scribbles on all of the trim except his collar! It's a bit hard to see and I think the fact I left out the collar detracts from my purpose, so thank you for that advice!

Many thanks for your wonderful comment! I hope you will see my improvement in time to come!

Hello! Thanks for writing back to me!
Your response is feedback for me; it helps me to become a better commentator in the future.

I am really glad to hear that you agree with my observations. I do agree with you - things can be quite different between the digital and the traditional world. The transition from one to the other definitely sounds difficult. But I think you are doing quite nicely already. What I pointed out are just little details for you to keep an eye out for the future, that's all. I am sure you'll keep on getting better and better!

It'll be a pleasure to see your new works in the group, I am sure. So hopefully we'll meet again soon!
