I would try a controlled gaussian blur on the background holding on to the crisp foreground including grass at its feet. slightly darken the water and background grass, giving more contrast.

It is a constant struggle I have with these types of images (the birds at the wetlands).

I just like to try a couple new things in photoshop, sometimes it helps the image, sometimes it hurts the image. I'm just trying to figure out a solution to help the heron stand out more- I don't like all the green. I feel like everytime I go to the wetlands and get these kinds of shots the birds get so lost in their surroundings (the marshes, the greenery). Whats your thought on this?
