This is my favorite quote from Tolkien and, indeed, my life credo so I've decided to give it a new "Hobbit" sparkle
I have always found this statement true and deeply intriguing, because it seems both religious ("given to us" - by Someone) and atheistic (time equals life and it's all there is). And, no matter if you believe or not, it makes you feel optimistic for it gives you faith that some things were not yet written down by Fate, that some things are left for you and for you alone to face or to diminish.
So, even if we go down fighting the dragon tomorrow, let us fall with a smile - for each day we have dared to do the things that most will only ever dream about!

Things we believe in change with time but what I find truly wonderful about Tolkien's books is that - by making us believe in honor, loyalty, bravery or noble sacrifices - he ultimately makes us believe in one another.

I am sorry Evelyn, that I called you Joane. I was responding to a friend of mine on Facebook who shared your quote of Tolkien's, above. I thought my message was going to her, but too late I realized it went to you. Forgive my blunder. Nevertheless, I am happy to add it to my favorites. I loved the movie, The HOBBIT. I saw it in 3D today. I'm looking forward to the next two movies that complete the story.

Today I saw the movie, THE HOBBIT; An Unexpected Journey. I liked it. Now I am looking forward to the next two movies that will complete the story. I must say, it was quite an adventure too, in 3D. I ducked several times as things came flying toward me on the screen. You are right, Joane. We ARE in the movie, when we view it in 3D. I also like the quote you have chosen from Tolkien. So far, I have been given 81 years, and each year gets better. The Lord has been good to me, and my loved ones.
