I remember this part in the '72 movie being significantly more hilarious than in the book. Brinker's and Gene's heads shot up and had the same expression EXACTLY. As if they were cats looking up to the sound of a dog barking.In the book, it was just kinda sad. Made you want to punch either Gene or Finny, but the problem was you never knew who to be angrier with.
And no, I wasn't trying to draw John Heyl and whoever played Brinker because one: I can't. And two: John Heyl was blonde and Finny was not.

This scene I find very heartbreaking in the book. Brinker was there in the movie? I only saw the trial scene....

Brinker and a bunch of other guys. They were alone in the locker room in the book, but in the movie they were hanging out in one of the boys' dorms. He was pretty amazing in the movie. Unfortunately, the movie made the heartbreaking "because I've suffered" scene into something waaaay too hilarious for its own good.

Okay so I've never seen the movie but your description of it made me snort out loud.
Also, your feelings about "wanting to punch either Gene or Finny," yeah, I get that completely. It was also sad because throughout the book Finny was pretty much made of sunshine and rainbows, and then he just comes out with THIS and it's like WHOA OKAY THEN.
Basically. You're awesome and this is awesome.

Neat visual depiction of a difference between the book and the movie. It illustrates how a relatively minor directorial decision can change the entire mood of a scene.

I was so angry the first time I saw the movie. I was all, "You're not being poignant enough!" Then I watched it after I grew up a little and could laugh at everything. The movie to me didn't really tell the same story as much as it was the director peeking in the book and going, "Okay! Let's do the part where Gene puts Finny's clothes on! Okay, now the swimming.... no, let's make that pole vaulting. No, it doesn't have to make sense! Go find me a stick!" And so on. The weirder the variations, the funnier it gets.
