If it helps to understand Eyeball's intentions here, monsters usually feed off of fear. Since Jessie isn't afraid, for however long Eyeball has been here, he can't seem to get anything from this kid. It's starving and desperate. If Purple hadn't showed up, who knows what Eyeball would've done. If the kid isn't afraid of its appearances, he would've had to try other tactics to scare him. It wouldn't have turned out well. Though do keep in mind, this is a flashback and Eyeball isn't like this now.
