Description A portrait of Ray Davies of The Kinks, c. 1967 or 68, which was the only painting I managed in the whole of 2013!

It was painted in Washington DC, where I lived for six months on official PhD business! It's also the third in a series I'm working on (very slowly) calledΒ 'No More Heroes' .

More in the series:

Thanks a lot, I was extremely pleased at the outcome of this portrait, especially considering that I had no particular plans for it. It's just sort of happened

I like the detail work in the shirt and the bold red.

Interesting... I happened to be in the area... during that time. We might've crossed paths...

Thanks Aud! Very long time no speak - I appreciate you coming here to leave a couple of comments!

Whereabouts in the vicinity were you, and what were you doing there?! Shame, as we could have met!

I haven't really kept up much online. I should try to reach out more to everyone and be more active.
You're welcome. I'm glad to see you've kept up with your art. I haven't painted anything in years.

I live and work in the DC metro area (DMV). That's too bad we didn't meet up. Β

Did you check out the National Gallery? I go there once in a while. The last big thing I saw was the Pre-Raephalite show. I couldn't believe how vivid Dante's paintings were in person. I had already seen a Waterhouse painting in NYC at the Met.

Me neither - I think it happens to a lot of us. Work and life get 'in the way'. Although, truly, I haven't really kept up with my painting much in the last 5-10 years or so - its only very recently that I've made a return. I'll grab the opportunity while I can, as it may be snatched away again at any moment.Β

Man, that sucks. I lived near Dupont Circle and then Capitol Hill. I had a placement at the Library of Congress for six months. We SO could have met, but how were we to know (in light of said lack of online engagement)?

I did make it to the National Gallery and liked it a lot. Pre-Raphealites are not too hard for me to come across however, being in London. Thank goodness, since I need me a fix every now and then . I also made it to the Met a few times - great place, very big (but too expensive and not Smithsonian enough, in that respect!)

I haven't picked up a brush in a long time 5-10 years. I still have brand new brushes and paper. I even bought a obscura so I could cheat on my drawings.. still didn't get back into it. I've taken up photography.

Yeah that does suck... Well if you ever coming back to DC, we should plan to meet. Or if I go to the UK...

Β So what were you doing at the library of congress? did you get to see the rare books? Oh okay, you lived in the 'cool' area...
I was thinking of leaving facebook making it even harder to connect with people. I would've been fine with msnger however, it's been discontinued for years.

When I went to NYC I end up going to the MET. I still prefer the National Gallery. I don't think the other galleries that I've been toΒ  have matched the quantity of well known artists in addition to the quantity in the US. Well you can't beat 'free" for an entrance fee. Although, when I went to the Met as a uni student you didn't have to pay the full 'suggested' price. I think one of my classmates only gave them a $1 and got in! Not sure if the policy had changed.

5-10 years?! Wow. That's kind of a shame really - but I suppose if you've moved onto photography than that still enables you to get your creative juices flowing. Still, painting is so different. Maybe one day you'll find both the time and the inclination to pursue it. You should. I still have that painting you gave to me all those years ago . I'd be a shame to give it up - the talent is latent.

Let me know if you ever come to the UK. Not sure when or if I'll be back in DC - I went back in March-April of this year for a couple of weeks, however. to do some follow up work. Initially, I basically won a scholarship to conduct part of my PhD research at the LoC, Kluge Center - a hub of academia and scholarship, if you will. It was a great experience.

Ahah, freebies for museums and galleries - always nice. Yeah, I really like the MET - its huge. I've been there twice and still haven't finished it. The Smithsonians are nice also, but I have to admit that its the lack of entrance fee that particularly turns my head . The MET still has the same policy but you'd get a pretty dirty look for offering a buck. I think their guide entrance fee was something like $12-18, can't remember exactly. I think I gave $5!!!

Well.. I'm doing some marker sketches. I feel like I'm lacking the proper red tones. So it feels unresolved until I get the reds I need. So that's on hold. I'm surrpised how good the rendering came out considering I haven't done any art in years. I haven't really been inspired by much except for maybe some cartoons such as adventure time. My sister is secretly trying to get me to paint. She bought me a set of brushes for Christmas.

Well as far as the Met giving us 'being cheap' guilt. It doesnt' work on me. There's soo many rich New Yorkers and all those Galas they host for fund raising.

I'm kinda going through a period of I hate my 'job' and I feel trapt and my life is going no where... I tried working as a designer for a bit and I did not like it at all. I just didn't like how it was not valued. People don't realize how essential design can be. Also I found design is not art!

Well I'm going to try and do more art this year. I need to cut back on watching BBC shows. I feel like I might turn British... lol.

Have you found your reds yet?? Its like riding a bike Aud - you never forget once you've learnt

I think we all go through that period of hating our jobs. You'll either have to stick it out or move on, I guess. Or perhaps becoming a reclusive - not to mention poor - artiste, who has high integrity, but nothing to show for it Or you could turn British ... for some insane reason .

Good question. My good friend a had bunch of red markers. So we did a trade. I did not produce anything yet exepct for a few doodles.Β  It's photography season... plus I'm on the hook for crafting.

My friend dragged me to an artist modeling session. I was expecting some old unattractive guy, so I didn't feel like bringing the good art sketch pad and materials.. I was wrong... It turns out we got a young fit guy. He's a pro model. I had never seen any model use a monopod to lean on.Β  He models on the side for 'artists' and has a day job. The women in the class spent the whole time checking the poor guy out and making comments. I paid no attention.. I kept it all about the drawing.

Well, I guess it's always a bonus to have a young, fitter model. I'll choose to believe that you were far higher-minded and neo-Stoic than the 'lesser' women present Nevertheless, one would not necessarily blame you if you were otherwise. We are, after all, only human ...

I don't think he was into women. .. I'm only there to draw! My only regret I didn't get his info, so I can figure out his modeling session.

On another note, did you graduate yet (PhD?)? I'm finding it difficult to enroll into Grad School. I've taken time off. I just can't decide what to study. It's a huge investment for me and very $$$.

Maybe you can ask the studio if they have his contact no?

As for the PhD, that's still ongoing. I keep going on continuation, and will do so again for one more year from September 2015- September 2016. It won't take that Β long though. I handed half of it in to my supervisors, and they basically say what I've done is way beyond the level of a PhD, so with the rest I'll have to scale it back to get it done. Instead, they've sent out what I've done so far to various experts in the field to revise it as a monograph to be published before too long. This is obviously a good position to be in ...!

That's great that your nearly done. I envy people who have direction in their lives and know what they want. I'm just getting frustrated with everything right now.

it looks great!Β
the pattern of his shirt is catching my eye
and a monotone background, it reminds a pop-art pieces from Andy Warhol %)
