Jewel Beetle was left on Photo Finish's doorstep years ago. Although she was shocked, Photo couldn't abandon the poor, crying filly.
She raised the little filly as her own, hiding the fact that her mother was a heartless monster.

Jewel grew up a shy, strange filly. It was hard for her to make friends due to her appearance. Most ponies labeled Post-Reformed Changelings as bad luck, or a bad omen, so young foals would tend to stray away from her.
Jewel used the extra time alone to practice her photography. She especially liked taking pictures of the subtle beauties of nature, like the way the sun sets behind the trees, or how a mother bird cares for her newly-hatched young.

For the longest time, Jewel was unhappy with her appearance-
Which is why she got into makeup artistry.

She would change her look completely, despite her mother's distaste.
It was in this way that she was truly happy. She could have fun, she could socialize, she could make friends, nopony would run from her... she was just like any other pony.
But once the facade was over, her newly-found friends would leave her anyway

She is still a bit wary around others, and would rather stay home most of the time
