  Twilight took the chance to raise the dragon born from the egg she chose. She named him Spike because of the small point at the end of his tail. At first, Twilight was distant when it came to Spike's interests. She did not see the worth in taking the time to know her young assistant. When she saw the young dragon struggling to read even picture books, she began to teach him Ponish. In teaching Spike to read, Twilight grew to enjoy having him with her

  Raising a dragon proved its difficulties as well, especially when Spike started having fits of spitting fire- a biological phenomenon common in young dragons once they reach three years of age. It caused Spike a lot of pain and kept Twilight up late, extinguishing the flames he would light as he slept. As if driven by maternal instinct, Twilight tried her best to keep Spike calm. It was the only safe way to keep his flames at bay. Since he was still young for a dragon, the comfort he got was when Twilight would hold him close- a behavior that Twilight replicated from mother dragons, which she avidly studied to keep her dragon friend comfortable. Twilight still has scattered scars on her body from Spike burning her

  This stage was abnormally long for Spike. This greatly worried Twilight. Every night, while Spike slept, Twilight anxiously searched for answers. Sadly, at this time, Equestrian libraries did not have much on dragons. Even the most advanced libraries didn't have much information past infancy. As a last-ditch effort, Twilight brought Spike to Celestia. If anypony had an answer, it would be her. Twilight burst into the throne room in the middle of one of Celestia's meetings. She was hysterical, begging that somepony here help Spike. The only person willing to help her was a strange shaman from another country

  She never said her name nor pulled the hood off of her head. She explained that she would have to take Spike with her for a few days to find a cure. Twilight refused and pleaded for another option, but the shaman insisted that this was the only way. Hesitantly, Twilight handed the young dragon over to her. Twilight began listing the things that she claimed he needed, crying as she continued. His favorite bedtime story, a thick ice cube to hold onto in case his throat hurt, his little stuffed donkey that she had given to her, and he couldn't be without a few of his favorite sapphires and a heated blanket to counteract the ice cubes. Celestia was shocked. Cold, collected Twilight Sparkle turned into a begging, crying mother. The shaman took Spike away. Twilight never forgot the way Spike cried out to her as they left, nor did she forget the eerie yellow glow of the mare's eyes

  The days that Spike was gone were the longest days that Twilight could remember. She couldn't bear the sight of his empty bed, and she was beginning to miss putting out his fires. When Spike returned to her, she picked him up and hugged him tightly, laughing in relief. Twilight was never seen very far from Spike since then

Spike was the first dragon to inadvertently earn a 'cutie mark' in the form of a star-shaped scar on the left side of his face. It's simply a mark from when he got his wings, but Spike calls it a cutie mark

Spike has the ability to teleport parchment from anyplace in Equestria to Celestia's palace. Most doctors suspect that it is rub-off from the intense magic used to birth him
