This is the prize drawing for for winning first place in the Competition on Napoleonic Austria. I hope you like it!

He asked for a drawing of the female Austrian officer Francesca Scanagatta and I was very happy with this request since she fits perfectly into my line up of historical figures – so here she is!

She was born in 1776 in Milano and switched places with her brother to attend the Austrian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt. She graduated in 1797 and participated in the campaign of the same year as a platoon commander. She also fought at the Siege of Genoa in 1800 where it is said she showed great bravery while defending the outpost of Barba. She was badly wounded, however managed to remain undiscovered. After being promoted to lieutenant she visited her parents who persuaded her to end her military career. She did, and went on to marry one of her former colleagues.

Upon learning that she was a woman Emperor Franz still granted her the pension of a lieutenant and she was allowed to sign with “Franz Scanagatta, Lieutenant”
