Name: Sanguine

Gender: Hind (f)
Age: Middle aged

Species: Common (Red deer)

Height: 4 feet/ 120cm at shoulder
Weight: 160 kg

Appearance: (This is primarily to describe your character’s build or any notable features.)

Herd: Elysium

Task: Mentor

Rank: 1

Personality:

Positive
-Persistent

When she puts her mind to a task, she will see it through. Whether this be chasing off intruders or wiping out every last member of a den of stoats, Sanguine will commit herself to the task.

-Protective

With the recent development of 'others to be protective of', Sanguine has become a fierce defender of anyone weaker than her. If a fawn, elder or expecting deer were in trouble, she would go to the ends of the earth to see them safely home.
-Self assured

Having the upmost opinion of her abilities was important when she lived alone; if you don't trust yourself, how can you trust to even stay alive?

Neutral
-Headstrong

She is determined to have her way in matters where she has an opinion (which is most of them). This can result in arguments, as she is also stubborn and doesn't like to admit she was wrong.
-Relentless

Sanguine is a doe hardened by life and rough around the edges. She is prone to pushing both herself and others too hard. This also means she will follow a task to completion, no matter the cost.

-Forward

Sanguine is prone to saying what she feels, when she feels it. She can hold her tongue when speaking to someone of higher rank, but she would just as soon tell them exactly what she thinks.

Negative
-Overconfident

Her confidence is usually a positive trait, however, it sometimes leads to Sanguine getting herself into tricky situations. She is too stubborn to see her faults, but is due for a nasty wake up call to her fallibility...

-Brutal

Sanguine will fight until there is no one left standing, and has no qualms about killing young predators before they are a threat.

-Selfish

A life spent solitary means Sanguine has to put conscious effort into thinking of others. Not to say she is incapable, but it does not come naturally. This often manifests in hoarding clovers.

History:

Born to a lone doe, Sanguine was used to days of hiding and her mother moving them to new pastures. They could not drop their guard without a herd to fall back on; it was only their eyes against those of any predators. Her mother told her the hunters were to be sensibly avoided, but not revered as some deer did. They were only beasts, their strength in their claws and fangs as a deer's are in their swift hooves. This was no comfort when the howls of wolves echoed around that fateful day's grazing land. It was too late to run, so Sanguine's mother hid her in a patch of strong smelling wild herbs and faced the beasts alone. There were only two, and they were young, but her mother was only one hind. Still, in their rush for what seemed to be an easy kill, she was able to strike one hard in the skull, then batter it with her hooves until it was barely able to scrabble away. Sanguine found a wolf carcass some months later, and likes to think it was her mother's kill even now. It was too late for her, but Sanguine took it as some consolation. It made her feel better to think her mother took down one of the wolves that bit her. That drove her leg to rot.

Knowing she was dying, Mother made fast all her teachings and told Sanguine to join one of the herds if she was able. There was safety in numbers, and many eyes could watch better than just two. Just two.

Mother was not content to die a poor death of illness, yet she knew the scent would bring predators to them. So when a pack of coyotes found them, she drove her daughter to leave. She couldn't run anymore, and they both knew this was too many hunters for a lame deer and her half grown calf to fight. Coyotes are opportunists. Sanguine doubted they even gave her a sideways glance as they fell upon the older hind.

More than anything, the snarling of coyotes, the howling of wolves, the burning in her exhausted legs, it was the sour smell of putrefying flesh that Sanguine can never forget. To this day, she fears sickness more than any predator.

Despite her mother's words, she didn't join a herd, instead living alone for some years. Most deer found her odd, and many mistrusted a hind barely out of her fawn spots claiming to have survived alone. It was only recently that she chose to join Elysium. Finally, a herd that would not only allow her to stand her ground, but encourage it. While joining as a low member, she set her hooves to the path of proving herself, and was quickly able to gain the rank of Whelp. She now betters the herd by mentoring fawns in survival skills learned from her time alone.

Other: Sanguine doesn't speak her mother's name, instead calling her Mother or Mother Wolf, as an honourific to her battle against the beasts. She believes it's poor luck to say the names of any dead, lest you join them.
