PenelopeSalt — Confrontation

Description My favorite feud of all time, as some of you may have already guessed. HHH vs. RKO (aka The Worm, er uh, I mean Viper).

This was originally intended as an in-your-face, splashy marker piece. I even went so far as to faintly ink important lines in preparation for something along the lines of Prismatic Fury ([link] ). But I stopped. let it sit for a couple weeks, and then came to the relucant conclusion that it didn't want me to marker it up. Instead, this insolent half-finished piece was demanding ballpoint. Yes, ballpoint. As in pen. As in approximately thirteen hours of laborious hatchy-watchy shading.

And have i mentioned how much I despise short hair? Not aesthetically, of course; the shorter the Worm's hair, the better. But DRAWING it...groan. I'd just like to go on record that I much prefer the long-greasy-locks technique.

This may become a series. I have other references of them yelling at each other that are all very tempting.

~

Entry in =Cataclysm-X 's Couples & Duos contest. It takes two to tango...I mean feud. Ruuthe.

Third place in Ultimate Fandom 4: Inspiration .
Source of Inspiration: WWE of course - Monday Night Raw in particular.
Genre: TV
It's a little weird to admit it in so many words, but the WWE is an irresistible inspiration to me. Like a testosterone-pumped soap opera, it's got its many little hooks sunk deep into me, and the best part of watching is the feuds. OH! The head-butting, snarling, let's-have-at-it-right-here feuds . Endlessly awesome.

Bernie Wrightson? Now that's a compliment. Thank you for the critique - you raised some valid points (and I am, in fact, now experimenting with darkening the negative space in photoshop; we'll see).

Yeah the ears are accurate. That's the one thing that I totally hate about drawing; sometimes you can draw something totally, one hundred percent correctly and it STILL looks wrong, sometimes even ludicrous. This happens more with fancy foreshortening and odd angles/lighting, but still. Oh well at least it's only ears.

As for the hair... I don't know any other way. Hee. As long as it works, I'm happy; and I've got sort of an autopilot now, so it's not as much work as it looks.

And I circley lines. Gotta watch myself there.

You know what I love about this? (Aside from its inherent awesomeness.) The circley things convey a sense of distinct, roiling motion, beneath what's clearly shown as a single moment.

I wanted something a bit more riotous than two static profiles, haha. But of course I don't know when to stop.

WOW. Seriously, just wow. You have outdone yourself, my dear. While I am not a fan of wrestling, I can definitely appreciate the beautiful work you've done in creating these two portraits and showing the way emotion manifests itself on faces. The cross-hatching does a lovely job of building visual intensity. Wonderful, wonderful work.

Immensely impressive shading, and while I'm not sure I know who these two are, I always thought there was something aesthetically appealing about one person yelling their heart out at someone else who just doesn't care. And you have such an interesting way of working the background into the foreground. I think I am a platonic fangirl of you.

PenelopeSalt In reply to Nemonus [2009-07-02 16:19:08 +0000 UTC]

I try always to draw fanart (and related stuff) so that people outside the fandom can still appreciate it on the basis of, well uh, art. I'm extremely glad to know it's mostly working.

Re the aesthetic appeal of yelling vs. not caring: YES. Although I'm kinda fixated on profiles period, yelling or not; the negative space is always fascinating to me. (One day, I shall have a Show. I better get cracking.)

I welcome all platonic fangirls. And don't feel like you have to stay sane just for my sake! Ha ha ha... hmmm, I don't even know what I'm talking about anymore...

Nemonus In reply to PenelopeSalt [2009-07-02 16:26:01 +0000 UTC]

It is working! But what are they from?

I'm glad to hear that you like profiles--I do too, but I've heard many people saying that 3/4 is always preferable... Yay profiles!

Is negative space the reason why such a confrontation is fascinating? I've wondered...

Have you seen this picture [link] ? Yours reminded me of it a bit.

If I am anything, it is a sane fangirl. At least on the surface.

PenelopeSalt In reply to Nemonus [2009-07-02 16:32:16 +0000 UTC]

They are WWE wrestlers. Ahem.

I love 3/4 too, but you just can't beat the clean lines of profiles. Heehee.

Haven't seen that picture, but...SCARY!!!!!!!!!!!!! >wheezing< Mine looks downright sedate after that!

Oh! Okay. I thought they might be. I don't watch it, but that's fine. XD

It is scary! But they are intense in different ways.
