Description "A bad mage is said to be worth a company of pikemen, a good one- an army." - High Councillor of Crezenza.

Hello!

Seems like I haven't posted anything for a while so I thought I'd get something up here. I've been working on coloring some commissions and practicing working on comics fully digitally using my Cintiq. This piece is one such practice, related to a comic idea I've been thinking about. This idea is about a fantasy world where mages can create and control magical constructs, golems and use them for their own needs- usually as mercenaries attached to an army of some of the many petty lords and small kings ruling the many city-states around where the story would begin. There are larger empires where lucrative trade can be made in border wars and campaigns by a skilled mage who knows their trade. The golem on this pic is one of the largest, as they are usually not much larger than a big human- 1,8- 2,5 meters or so. Favoured anti-golem- weapons in this world are siege engines, ballistae and the like, and the emerging technology of the gunpowder cannon. This has of course led to some mages(who can afford it) to armour their creations.

This is indeed why mages would be heavily protected, and why tactics and subterfuge would revolve around taking out enemy mages. On the battlefield, I expect there to be lots of pavises wherever mages roam.

Great drawing!

Yes, they'd be well behind the lines or at least well protected against enemy attacks, usually sporting personal protection and some bodyguards. Thanks!

This looks right of Howard Pyle's ink illustrations for his Robin Hood retelling, but with 100% more golems. Awesome atmosphere.

I searched for an image of Blitzcrank and yeah, there's some similarities. It's a very basic kind of design though and similar looking things are also featured in many games and comics, like Berserk for example(Schierke's home in the forest).

Thanks!

This is a really well done piece. I really like how you've incorporated the late medieval look with fantasy elements in a way that feels hollistic and natural.

Glad to know it works. In this fantasy world I've been constructing there are elements from many different historical periods and cultures mixed and changed to form something new, hopefully in a way that seems fitting. There's a lot of work to be done...

Thanks!
