Description
Pulpit Inside the Old Pilgrim Church near Elkhart, TX
This log cabin is a (1949) replica of the original church, built here in 1839-1848 (sources vary). Pilgrim Church is reported to have been the first protestant church built in Texas. When founder, Daniel Parker failed to get permission to establish his church in Texas (due to restrictions placed by Mexico against non-Roman Catholic churches) he returned to his home in Illinois and established the Pilgrim Church in July 1833. The band of believers then made their pilgrimage to Texas arriving in January 1834, and settling in the area which was within Stephen F Austin's colony. Reverend Parker, who died in 1844, is buried in the adjacent cemetery.
The red brick church built on the site in 1929 still stands today.
