So why do all the characters in the Pokemon anime look like their game counterparts, but the Mario characters in the DIC show don't?

The anime is owned by the Pokemon company. You can tell this by how the shows show on the official Pokemon website... But the game creators Gamefreak dont really have control of what goes on in the anime. Gamefreak is part of it and somewhat controls it ( which is weird since they came first) since they usually do main stories and some other handheld games... But that is what the creator Satoshi is in charge of... He doesnt do anything with the anime and neither does the nintendo creator Shiguru. But the anime characters are supposed to be based off of the game characters... Ash is supposed to be red and gary is blue... But the anime department of Pokemon determine how they act and what they go through... So they do have close connections...but the game leaders don't really determine what goes in the anime. Sorry if that sounded weird. Somewhere Satoshi stated the anime really was not what he wanted and preferred the early red in the mangas version over ash. But Gamefreak does recognize the Anime and in fact made Yellow to reflect it. DIC however has no connections to Nintendo at all with the exception as rights to the character. But since the games were made first the games would be canon and the anime and manga stuff on the side or possible canons... Such as mewtwo creation was canon in the kovie.
