“Dearies!” Dunia’s voice sang out from the Lair’s entrance, “I’m back from hunting!”

Kion looked towards her, with an expression of relief. Three younger cubs ran past him, to meet their mother as she pranced inside.

“Good evening, your highness!” Dunia said, before turning to her cubs. “Did the prince make a good babysitter?”

“Yes!” the cubs answered in unison.

“Did he teach you all about the Lion Guard?”

“Actually, they just kept asking me to explain... y’know, the circle of life,” Kion answered for them, chuckling nervously.

“The circle of life? But they know about decomposi—oh!” she chirped, noticing the look of discomfort on the prince’s face, “Reproduction!”

Kion covered his eyes with a paw.

“Yeah,” he mumbled, “I tried to make it appropriate. I told them that a lion falls in love with a lioness, they get married, and then they make a baby.“

“Well,” said Dunia, tapping her chin with a claw, “That’s right sometimes—but that isn’t always how animals reproduce.”

“Huh?”

“My cubs here have three different fathers,” she said, cheerfully.

“Three?! Wha—but they’re the same age!”

“Oh yes, lionesses—any female cat, actually—can get pregnant by plenty of males at once!”

Her cubs had gathered around her, listening with great interest. Kion had scooted back against the wall, eyes wide.

“It’s good for the species, cause it creates more diversity, y’know?” continued Dunia, without a hint of shame, “And you certainly don’t have to be married to have babies, I only met those gents the once. Anyway, that’s only cats, there’s lots of interesting ways that animals reproduce.”

“Th-that’s great,” said Kion. If it weren’t for his fur, it would have been obvious that he was blushing. “Anyway, I’ve gotta meet with the Guard, would you guys mind—?”

“Tell us more!” one of the cubs shouted over him.

“Yeah!” said another, “How do other animals repo-duce?”

“Oh, where to start!” said Dunia, “Do you know about the jacana bird?”

The three cubs shook their heads, as Kion covered his face again.

“Well, female jacanas have what’s called a harem; that’s a whole group of males that she reproduces with!” she continued, not noticing as the prince began to tiptoe past her and out of the Lair, “She has a clutch of eggs with one male, then lays them in his nest, then has a clutch of eggs with another, then lays them in his nest, and....”

My version of those three new cubs we got a look at!

It was a cute video, and it makes me happy to see new 2D lion content But way they represented the circle of life made me think “hmm, naturally they’d make it that way in a Disney Jr music video, but in-universe would that really be how the characters talk about it? After all, there’s lots of variety in the animal kingdom”... hence we get this cheeky intro to my version of those three cubs, and their joyful, very honest mama

I’ll make a separate piece to properly give the full backstory to Dunia and her cubs—guess that ‘Kiara’s generation showcase’ isn’t finished after all As for my version of their names: the pale cub is Huru (free, autonomous), yellow cub is Raha (fun), brown cub is Hiari (choice, option). Dunia’s name means ‘the world’
