Agreed!
Just for the record, it's Kathryn, not Katherine. Kathryn Merteuil and Sebastian Valmont. Roger Kumble's goal was that her name reflected her persona: sounds soft and pretty when spoken, but cutthroat and severe when analyzed on paper. The technique was modeled after Christopher Hampton, the writer of the 1988 Dangerous Liaisons (which, like Cruel Intentions, was a film based on Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' novel "Les Liaisons Dangereuses"), who first extended the characters' names from the original Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont (note the alliteration of V's and M's) to Madame le Marquise Isabel de Merteuil and Monsieur le Vicomte Sebastien de Valmont. Hampton modeled both character's names so that they were written different than they were conventionally spelled (to denote the duality of their personalities), and Kumble mirrored this technique in Cruel Intentions with Kathryn's name only (as his version of Valmont was more public with his debauchery, and therefore lacked Kathryn's duality) and gave Valmont the name Sebastian as a shout out to Hampton's original.
