This awesome sketch art card of Aja from African Mythology is drawn by the very talented artist Yuriko Shirou for our Classic Mythology III trading card set.

Aja - This forest Goddess is honoured by the Yoruba people of Nigeria. Aja is an Orisha, the spirit of the forest, the animals within it and herbal healers. She is a patron of the forest and all the animals within it. She holds the secrets of botany, and is a master of potions and healing herbs. She passed this skill to the Yoruban people, who practice her craft to this very day.

Among the Yoruba, aja also refer to a “wild wind”. It’s believed that if someone is carried away by aja, and then returns, they become a powerful “jujuman” or (babalawo). The journey supposedly will have a duration of between 7 days to 3 months, and the person so carried is thought to have gone to the land of the dead or heaven (0run).

Will any Loa ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loa ) appear in this series of goddesses, too?

I too would appreciate that. The Dahomey deities here are part of Vodoun's origin. James Sweet biography of Domingos, a 16th century Mini Priest sold into slavery by the new Dahomey King, offers a lot of good information about early Vodoun roots.

Yes! I'm surprised that everyone with an interest in African mythology and religion plus the African Diaspora Religions and hoodoo has not read his books. Recreating Africa includes information about Kongo and Dahomey "men who are women" - Africa slaves all understood that they were women but the Portuguese didn't. This makes it obvious that the homophobia often found in ADR is Catholic, not African. Both cultures had at least 3 genders. It's an example of the really important cultural roots that have been lost - and now found!

The Kongo women in Domingos have possession in a way that makes me wonder if it's connected to the Haitian Vodou practices in the mountains. It's much more inaccessible so information is not available except that lwas are "inherited." The mountains were settled by mostly Kongo people who were believed to be better at farming coffee. It's not like the famous Port-au-Prince Vodou, but the Dahomey did set the structure, having arrived first.
The book gives information about how the Dahomey pantheon was created - mostly taken from the Yoruba - and the practices by Mini slaves in Brazil 16th century predate the Dahomey Royal Family ancestor religion by 100 years. Dahomey changed Fon-speakers and Ewe-speakers religions greatly. The Haitian Rada lwa come from the town of Arada.
I can't recommend Sweet's books enough for the serious student! It's been amazing!

Have you ever thought about publishing a book about African mythology and religion yourself?

Thank you! Well, someone has been pushing me to write more, but I don't know if I'm qualified. I'd probably want to be initiated and have Godparents first. Maybe a Tarot deck, though! I'm working on the Lovers with Shango and Oshun.
