Description again up Figueroa Mountian, I left my light meter up here after this shoot and it took me 5 days to realize where it was so after it had been raining for a few days I drove back up here and hiked over to discover my light meter in the grass still in perfect working order. This is my plug for sekonic and how wonderful that 508 meter is.

Marvelous exposure! What type of print are you doing, to achieve this type of tonality?

Ahhh, wow. That just calls for you to gambol about the place with your shirt off. I'm a sucker for mountains, although we have none here around.

The tone you have in your photographs is very appealing. While I'm not sure if it is the best choice for this particular setting (considering maybe something bluish?), it does help in creating a warm atmosphere.
The tree looks very powerful, standing there all alone against the sky. The feel is multiplied by the branches being all dark. What would multiply it even further, is perhaps more free space around it -- the photo feels a bit tight. I mean, maybe a bit more sky portrayed would be even nicer.
The clouds and the farther mountain (hill?) balance the photo nicely. What I think distracts it slightly, is the dark patch in the foreground.

Just my two cents. I hope you are not offended as I am only trying to be constructive. Myself, I feel awkward going off criticizing you, knowing you're obviously so much more skilled than me anyway. *humble*

WOW! that tree is amazing. so are the clouds. how happy you must have been to experience both at once! or is this a common occurence on Figueroa mountain?

I really like the exposure and compostion you've got here.
i would really like to know what kinda of toning you've done here? is it working the darkroom, or photoshop?
you have a very good eye for composition.

well first you need to get good at processing your b/w film so you can get predictable results. Then you can do some reading on basic zone system stuff and test your film for an EI and at that point you're pretty much there just have to meter and place your tones where you want them.

luag In reply to perry [2004-03-10 09:54:58 +0000 UTC]

thanks a lot mate
i will try to find some articles about zone system.
btw, EI stands for exposure index, right?
and when you meter for photo like this, do you meter the incident or reflected light?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

perry In reply to luag [2004-03-10 10:17:30 +0000 UTC]

yeah EI is exposure index and basically what that means is the true iso of the film because all the brands always beef up their isos rating the films too fast. When I meter my photos I place my shadow detail (Zone V) then I meter my highlight detail (Zone II) and depending on the difference between them I decide how to process that roll of film. These ones where i'm shooting into the sun usually get processed as a n-1 or n-2 depending on how bright the sky is or how many clouds there are in the sky. I do all of it with a reflective meter.

Hope this helps.

thank you for your time explaining it

my lightmeter is sekonic 358...do you think a spot meter attachment is a good investment? or should i just get a 'real' spot lightmeter?

Ack. Bad light meter! How dare it have the nerve to stay behind and make you drive all the way back! (yes.. that's it...) Awsome feathery clouds and they seem to contrast quite well with the texture of the grass.
